You've got to see this hood, who would do such a thing?

PO said he slide on ice down hill off his driveway hitting tree. This apparently bent hood at crinkle zone along with damaging grill, grill center and DS moldings. No damage to bumper, impact bumper or radiator support. No self-respecting body man would every do this, would he! He may brace it, but no rust protection! He should be taken out and ?????

I can't live with it (OCD), anyone now where I can get an 01 LX470 Hood (99-02)

Both side braced and unprotected.

Cruiser Parts DOT net??

makes one wonder what other shortcuts were done....

I would just spray it for now and try to find a used one the same color if you don't want to spend much on repair, it isnt causing any issues as it is so no need to rush. I would be more upset if I had paid for the repair and that is what was done, the hood is probably full of body filler also.

Ps. Why did they grind the paint off to just rivet the plate on anyway. They must of forgotten to finish the underside after repairing the top.

You bought it looking like that?? Like arcteryx said, if the PO is willing to take a shortcut like that, what other shortcuts has he taken with the rig?

that is unbelievable.

car-parts.com normally is useful for used parts.
I known, unbelievable. Thanks I'll check them out.

Fortunately the PO did/had very little done with this LX. He was a great guy and told me what he knew, but all he knew was you put the key the little slot. The same body shop fixed the rear bumper. I found small dent in far lower corner of 1/4 panel behind bumper. I'll need to repair or at least rust protect.

I'm just covering with marine grease for now. Yeah I agree, it looks good for now.

That is what I could not figure out, just made no senses. I may call him and asked. PO apparently took and said make my LX look good to sell, on the cheap. But really why grind off the paint then use no protection. Follow up by riveting on a steel plate with steel rivets, and not even primer. Well pot is legal here...LOL

The price was OK. I should have been a little hard on price perhaps for hood issues I suppose. But both him and his wife had some very severe medical issues. We (my girl friend and I) spend the day with them, very nice people in late 60's. So I didn't mind overpay a touch, and I can do most fix-up work myself, PO could not. Beside this puppy has history. According to Carfax & PO it survived Katrina, then moving to Colorado after loosing it's/there home. No it wasn't in deep water. Nor has it been off road, well not intentionally...LOL

At this point the body parts looks to be my biggest expenses. The mechanical stuff I'll work through as I would any baseline. But other than this minor stuff, it's a straight body & frame. The pictures make it look like a rusty rig, but it's not. I just have camera set to show, helps me find and stop in it's tracks. I'll have this girl show room fresh by next winter.

PO had new windshield, full T-belt job right down to and including seals and brakes done by good shops. He even help get new molding for windshield properly installed by Safelight free to me. He spent over $3k on this stuff in pasted 3,500 miles. I'm hoping no surprises, and I'm happy at this point.

Getting body parts at good price is key to my total cost. So I'll need to be patient.

I finally found a Golden Pearl white LX hood in my area, attached to 98 LX470 (Yeti as he's know) with clean title. Hooray:bounce:

It took 8 months, thanks for recommending I be patient @Ali FJ80 & @Julian Stead it paid off.;)

A little history of search:
Each morning I'd search within 1K miles, keeping out of rust belt. Saw two during that time at local Copart lot, but biding went way above my budget. The price pros are paying for some of these salvage titled totals at Copart is mind blowing high.

I did find some hoods within my search area but held-out for local, as yards are reluctant to ship hoods even if offered extra $$. I considered driving to pick up, but more than a day trip would run cost up to much. I also found some dubious venders, that speak as if they have a yard, but actually just shady valued added resellers or total scams.

As I said: patients paid off, as I found some great deals along the way, that I was able to benefit ($$ & knowledge) from. Then finally found what I was looking for in my search.

Bodywork:
Turns out the rig I bought for parts had pervious repair giving me some new parts, sweet. I actually replaced some parts I didn't really need, just because newer & better looking than mine. Like new repainted bump skin and new impacted zone bumper. Replacement Hood has original paint, just what I wanted. This saved me ~$4K (with bumper & paint) in body shop work and gets me the best matching paint available.

Before removing old bent parts (upper bumper reinforce, hood latch support and side brackets) I pulled straight. This helps to correct any minor bending of internal that may be unnoticeable to my eye. Like radiator support or wielded on support brackets bolting points, that I'm not removing. They look good but it's just best practice, plus gave me usable old parts. Old bent parts turned out so good I did not need to replace, but did anyway. My replacement parts fit perfect, which tells me I don't have any hidden damage. So my damage was only superficial damage, as I thought all along.

Bent internals, upper bumper reinforcement. Slight impact to bumper impact zone at bottom. This fit with high angle of low speed impact, as PO explained he slid on ice off his steep driveway into tree.

Slight bend of bracket mount, pulled out perfect.

This can push up hood latch making hood set high. Pulling out to correct angle (bow) pulls down tight, but effect is minimal. FSM shows this support as adjusting point for hood latch.

Final pull, worked great. All most look like new.

New internals parts in, confirming all components straight. SWEET.

I need to get hood gaps aligned, touch up rock chips, may be a little paint-less dent repair, DA cut, polish & wax as time & weather permit. Then the Whitelady IS SHOW ROOM READY. She aged well as they say. Runs, handles and looks great with some age related cracking in leather, beauty marks one could say.

Old Hood sat evn a 1/4" higher than seen here, due to poor straightening of hood. Missing and broke grill & moldings center & DS. Headlight and side marker had bad lenses. Bumper paint poor condition.

Spent hours trying to line-up hood gap, it just didn't want to cooperate. Took adjusting slip (S) bolt from hinge to fender and swapped with one of the self centering (C) bolt in hinge to hood, per FSM. But just couldn't get the leading edge gaps to even out. Then finally it dawned on me to try adjusting hood latch ..DUH :bang: I was able to move latch 16th", bam hood line up perfectly.

Cut, polish & waxed hood looking good with a perfect color match, at least in light of my garage.:bounce:

I've seen worse, and done worse when I worked at a body shop... Only at the customer's request if they were paying out of pocket, and not a safety item.

Looks great! Gold.

Turned out really good, I'd go chrome!
Thanks for your opinions guy's. My girl GF likes gold, I can go either way.

I'm leaning toward chrome, only because it has chrome everywhere elsewhere and is on now.

Much as I hate to, I'm selling the Whitlady she's a beauty. She really turnout nice looking & mechanically. But winter is here, an shop work has stop until warmer days. So I'm most interest in opinions in deciding what help sells better.

One other consideration is the chrome grill is rock pitted, whereas gold is near new looking.

I hear you, and that's what happened with PO.

In speaking with body shop they didn't feel this would present safety issue as rivets would just pop. But in a restoration project such as this it just wouldn't due with my name on it.
