I’m aware that Toyota had some early problems with turbos and spun bearings. But I thought those were found in only early production vehicles. Are recent production vehicles still having those issues?

Yes, as recently as MY2023.

My2024 too soon to tell.
 
I am actually strongly considering selling my base 300 GX for a 250 series.
However, I have a few things I'm worried about.

1 - Comfort
I know they will both be comfortable and ride well, but the way the cabin of the LC300 is positioned, it is done so in a very interesting way, different to many vehicles, and very different to any previous LC, everything is positioned perfectly for your body not to feel fatigue over long distances. It makes a huge difference and makes the 300 a very nice place to be on super long drives. Maybe the 250 will have the same philosophy, we won't know till we drive it.

2 - Reliability
The twin 6 LC300 is still plagued with some issues, so i'm worried about how the new turbo 4 will be. I have 0 reliability worries with my 1GR 300; it performs very well also vs previous 1GR 200.

3 - I have been spoiled by that front locker, spoiled I tell you. I have been doing some excessive things off road and have used the front locker a lot and I feel so much more confident thanks to it. Yes, I can go add a front locker but having it factory is so much easier. Having a front locker has made my life so much easier in some circumstances, its amazing.

4 - Pricing...with the 250 I don't care what spec I get because as far as I know in my country, all of them will have the same engine - the issue will be pricing for me. A 300 is still a 300, still top dog, still will have more road presence, that feeling of having the best of the range still translates into the 300, even if it looks ''more boring'' than a 250. If I can sell my 300 and get a brand new 250 while saving cash, I will do that, otherwise it'll be difficult to convince me otherwise. Lots of people I know have shared this sentiment and said if the pricing is very minor between a base 300 and a 250 they will opt for the 300.

The 250 strongest rival? The 300 series and in the US will probably be the 4runner. However it's a win win for Toyota in the end.

Am in love with the 300? Yes, first time I love a Land Cruiser since the 100 series which will always have a special place in my heart. I never loved the 200.
Actually I never loved the 80 series either. I liked the 80 and 200 and respect how tough they are and I have owned them and still own a LX 570 but after driving the 100, going back to an 80 is difficult, same applies for 300 vs 200.

Can it be better? Yes but the stuff it can be better at is mostly spec related, the actual base of the vehicle, the actual platform, the way it drives, the way it is to daily, its magnificent. It makes the 200 series feel the same way the 100 made the 80 feel.

This will translate to the 250 but will it feel as great as the 300? Won't know till I drive and even a short drive isn't enough.

Yes, same 1GR as the 4Runner.

The weight loss vs LC200 made it feel pretty peppy to drive for something that on paper should be gutless, which it isnt.

Lots of reported issues for the twin 6.
It even gained a reputation locally for being unreliable, it caused a spike in 1GR sales as lots of people were afraid of getting the new engine.
Overblown/overreacting...maybe, one could say that the amount of reported engine issues is just a small % vs total production, the difference this time is alot of people are getting the same issues & most Toyota owners aren't used to this kind of unreliability.

I don't doubt Toyota will fix any issues if they haven't already done so.

Im hoping it has since been taken care of and that the detuned version in the GX has no issues.

I am surprised to hear that. Here, in the USA, all I hear is about the complaints of the V6 in the 5th Gen T4R. I am surprised that there are LC200 and LC300 with the same engine and that they do well from what you have said.

The only thing good about the 4.0 is its reliability. Now that’s not a small thing, of course. But the 4.0 doesn’t have great power, it has poor NVH, and it gets terrible fuel economy. In a vehicle as heavy as a 200 it would feel gutless.

The LC200 with the 1GR was definitely not the engine to have.
The 2008-2011 had the single VVTI 1GR that was noisy and gutless.
The 2012+ got the dual vvii 1GR, it was smoother and an improvement. However, the 200 was pretty heavy and the engine definitely struggled.
The v8 1UR/3UR were better honestly in every way.

With the 300 series, they didn't change the 1GR, it was a carried over, but because the 300 became lighter, the engine feels less lethargic and it can get it moving pretty well.
For its size a 1GR LC300 probably has the same acceleration as a 1GR 4runner, which is pretty impressive, so we are talking 0-60mph in almost 7.7/ 8 seconds flat give or take, which is not bad for what on paper is a pretty weak engine. The lack of torque can be noticeable though at times in the sand.

The twin turbo v6 is a beautiful engine to drive and is way more powerful than any land cruiser engine before it. I would just avoid the first year/Second LC300 with that engine in the future for peace of mind.

My 1GR LC300 can out run a 1UR 200 series V8 and a 3UR GCC Spec LX 570 up to a certain speed that I rather not mention but it is definitely past 60mph. So in terms of acceleration a 1GR LC300 is much quicker than you think it is.
(Keep in mind our 5.7 was slightly rated at less hp (362hp for both LC/LX) than the US version ( 381hp lc /383 LX )so it was just a bit slower than the US version.
It will also completely obliterate a 1GR LC200, even though they both have the same engine.
However in the sand the V8s torque is much better. The 1GR torque is not great.

The new Prado engine might end up in the base 300 series at some point as a replacement for the 1GR...

Any idea why they keep calling it 1GR? The dual vvti 1gr shared almost no parts with the original. My memory is that they shared crank shaft bearings and some assorted nuts and bolts but almost nothing else. If the new one is just as different, maybe it's time to call it a new engine?

I really like the 1gr everywhere but the highway. Just not enough power and the 5at doesn't help.

I've driven the 1gr 300 on extremely high speeds in "mexico" and it reaches the limiter like its nothing. Would keep going too if it wasn't limited.
Mine is 6 speed auto though.
 
The 1GR for the GCC is a radically different engine than the one for the US market.
Do you have any specs or info on this engine? I couldn't find info on it in a quick Google search.

The more I read about these teething problems in the new turbo motors, they more I appreciate my mildly modded 2UZ-FE :).

Its the same carryover engine as the lc200 2012 1GR
But because the lc300 is lighter and I don't know what else they did, it feels much peppier.
Figures are identical but 0-100 km/h is almost 1.5/2 seconds quicker.
My main issue isn't speed, it's quick, the torque is pretty low though its like only 380/385nm

Same 270 horsepower as the current US 1GR? I agree that 284 ft/lbs (385 nm) is a very low amount of torque, and not something I think would be enjoyable in a SUV over 4,500 pounds :). A good friend of mine ended up selling his 5th gen 4Runner TRD Off-Road partially due to it being very slow with a 33s, a RTT, drawers, and other add-ons.

I rented a Gen 5 4Runner recently to take some friends from Paris on a week long tour of Arizona. With 4 adults and gear in the truck, we cruised at 78 mph while the engine purred at 2000 RPM. How fast are you permitted to or need to drive? The speed limit here is 65 mph most places. The 1GR drove great, acceleration was quick and the fuel consumption on the highway was much less than what I imagined from reading posts here. This was my third experience with the 1GR in a 4 Runner and it explains to me why Arizona is absolutely infested with them. The engine is kind of loud at idle but for someone used to driving diesels it was by no means a dealbreaker. There is a company in France that can homologate 1GRs and if that is true then a GCC LC300 or a 4Runner import might be a nice alternative especially in an increasingly diesel repressive EU political environment. So my review of this engine matches Brown98LC’s pretty much word for word. The US 1 GR engine is excellent and if it is super reliable, then all the better.

When I test drove the 2016 4Runner, I thought that engine had very low torque off the line. Yes, 0-60 was about the same as my ‘03 V8 4Runner, but to get that you had to rev the V6 to high RPMs, where that V6 sounds like crap. The 5-speed transmission in the 5th Gen 4Runner certainly does the V6 no favors.

I stand by my previous statement. The only good thing about the 4.0 is its reliability. It has bad NVH. It is lacking low-end torque. It gets horrid fuel economy.

There is a saying in the automotive world that people buy horsepower but drive torque. Lots of low-end torque is what makes a vehicle very nice to drive. You can move away smartly from a traffic light with low revs and little drama. The 5.7 has a lot of low-end torque. The old 4.7 V8 also had good low-end torque. The 4.0 simply doesn’t have good low-end torque. The 4.6 is smooth, but when I test drove the GX460, I thought it was also soft off the line — at least it didn’t sound like crap at high rpm (unlike the 4.0).

I also can't imagine trying to tow anything with a 4.0 that probably has 60-80 less ft/lbs of torque than my lightly modded 2UZ-FE, and the same 3.73 gears. That combo really needs 4.30 gears or lower along with the 6-speed transmission to keep revs down on the highway - which is something Toyota could have easily done - but didn't.

The A750F is really a great transmission, but again putting less motor in front of it than I have would probably change that assessment.
