I am in need of some real life feedback. I am over building hardcore wheelers where comfort suffers. I also no longer really run hard trails. My 60 saw a couple and my Disco saw a lot. I have a 1 year old and my wife and I are wanting to get her out camping, fishing, etc... more (please do not use that :rainbow: overlanding term). Past rigs would have worked but they lost out in a few key areas. The GX keeps popping up as a really viable option. I am not a fan of the 4th gen 4Runner and its blindspots (plus, at 6'4", I do not find it all that comfortable) but am of the GX. It is more comfortable and with a little bit of lift, could easily handle what I might throw at it (say, greens and blues up at Rausch). The GX has enough aftermarket and enough support here that it is a very good option.

From the buyers guide thread, I am looking for one without navigation as being my primary objective. Not impossible but definitely not too common. Everything else is not too big a deal it seems. The later ones with the 5AT would be nice to allow slightly better mileage. Overall chassis mileage is high and that is where I begin to enter different territory. It is hard to pitch an 80k mile 2004-2008 vehicle to my wife as a good purchase, considering both our current cars have fewer than 24k on them. This brings me to a couple of questions:
1. How many miles are too many miles? I will load VINs into the Lexus site to research service records so that I have an idea as to history.
2. When and in what state (mileage, year, etc...) did you get your 470? What have you had to do to it while it has been under your stead?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not the expert but I have an 06 with 107k on it. Bought it last June with 95k+/- on it here in south Alabama. So far I haven't had to do anything but change the oil. The dealer did a good service on it, which was the deciding factor over another GX in the area. Being a Lexus mileage wasn't a huge concern but glad I still got one with under 100k on it. May be harder to find but they're out there with lower miles on it. And those miles will be to the grocery store, school, soccer field, etc. No nav/kdss on mine.

Mine is still pretty stock. I've added a Front Runner roof rack and will be having a hidden winch mount installed this weekend, and possibly suspension and tires.

Perhaps you have been poisoned from owning a Disco ;) but 80k on a Toyota/Lexus is nothing - so long as service history is available. The other thread is very helpful, I'll add - aside from mods - I have done nothing but routine service since getting my GX @78k mi. And I suspect, as with my 80, once it passes 250k mi I might start thinking that's a lot of miles, hmmmm........

Sounds like you've narrowed down what you want - I'd suggest holding out til you find The One that checks all the boxes, has a clean Carfax, and full service records.

Fwiw I am 6'4" and the GX is great. Check my link for more info. Currently at 164k with no issues

I bought a 2007 with 41k mi. in Tulsa, OK in January 2015. I am up to 52k mi. and have done nothing but change oil. It had a very thorough service record at the Lexus dealership. No Nav/no KDSS. Only mod is a roof rack I modified to bolt to factory roof location for carrying a couple canoes and lumber when needed. Did great on a 1,700 mi. road trip this summer pulling a pop-up camper and hauling two canoes on the roof. With most of our gear in the camper, we had plenty of room for the 4 kids and 2 adults on the trip. Plenty of smooth power and great traction. So far the stock suspension has been great running reasonable off road trails and the ride is crazy smooth.

I am a British car guy through and through. I have owned multiple MGs and will more through out my life. I did go from the D1 to my BJ60 and what a difference it was. EVERYTHING about the 60 was bigger, tougher, and better built (except the frame). I really am leaning towards a GX to pull family and daily duties. My commute is about 20 miles round trip so 15 mpg isnt really all that bothersome. I have hit the point where I no longer want myself, nor my wife, to suffer with poor ergos, noisy ride, etc... just to go ride trails and camp. All of my trucks were WAY overbuilt for what I ended up using them for. Skinny 33s, sliders, my Engel, and a tent is more than enough.

I probably wouldn't look at any with over 400,000 miles on them....not that it'll be worn out, but you may feel it necessary to do more preventative maintenance than you would on units with less mileage :hillbilly: Seriously, it's understandable that you'll probably want to buy the lowest mileage example you can find/afford; however, I currently have a 2000 UZJ100 with 306,000 miles on it, and it runs as smoothly and strongly - maybe more so - as my 2004 GX! It burns / uses zero oil, oil pressure is still great, no noises, etc. As long as you keep the timing belts, water pumps, heater Ts, etc. serviced, the 2UZ is an u n b e l i e v a b l y durable engine, and the transmissions are nearly the same. (Incidentally, all GX year models have the 5-speed transmission)

All that being said, less than 150,000 miles is an infant, in Toyota terms, so buy what makes you comfortable. The first GX we had was a 2003 that my wife drove for 10 years, and the only thing we EVER had to do to it, other than oil changes, tires, etc., was replace a transfer case seal. And I mean, that was IT! Probably the best all-around car I've ever owned!

Like you, I have dabbled on the dark side with Land Rovers, although my Defender 90 was a lot more crude than your D1 - and probably less problematic. But there's NOTHING like Toyota durability and reliability! Feel confident that whatever year you get - provided you can document service and lack of accidents / abuse - it'll be one of the best multi-purpose vehicles you can buy. I bought my current '04 in Dallas with 159,000 miles, and other than baselining it, I installed a Toytec 3" lift, SPC upper control arms and 285/70-17 BFG A/T KO2 tires. Best off road comfort of any vehicle I've ever owned.......

Can you tell I'm pretty happy / impressed with Toyota Land Cruisers? (the GX is, basically, a Land Cruiser Prado)

You'll find the GX to be about perfect for those needs! I too got rid of my triple-locked 80 w/ lift and MT's for something perfectly comfortable for DD, a truck my wife actually likes riding in or driving, yet still has capability on the trails.

Keep in mind the 4.7L V8 was also used in the Land Cruiser (1998 - 201?), 1st gen Sequoia and Tundra; and the V8 4R. It is a relatively common unit, well known and respected for longevity; same with the transmission, transfer case, rear axle & front diff. Guess the take-away is the mechanicals are well-known and uphold Toyota's rep for durability == miles are not a concern if it's been maintained.

(I still twitch when I think about the '98 Disco I owned. "English car guy" is a euphemism for masochist.) ;)

I'm surprised you tall guys like the GX. I'm only 5'10" and am good in the driver's seat, but I get kind of cramped in the passenger seat when the :princess: is driving. I wish the passenger seat tipped down and up like DS, or like they do in the Land Cruisers- even Cruisers 10 years older than the GX. Probably my only complaint on the rig is the passenger seat. :meh:

The wood grain on the front doors of ours has cracked. The dash is spiderwebbed and awaiting it's recall replacement. When it gets replaced, I'm going to get its last dealership full service done and put on a lift with some 285/70-17s. I've had to replace both CV axles due to split boots. (I used parts house axles for their lifetime warranty and have the OEM axles waiting for new boots, basically two spares) The side trim on the doors fell off the first hot southern summer. The felt window trim things has disintegrated on both back doors. That'll get replaced at the last service. The ignition switch wore out and it was hit or miss cranking. I had to replace it with an overnighted RockAuto unit because we live 2 hours from a dealership...in three directions. Now the keys don't match the doors. This is getting addressed at the last service also.

Toyota dealership cowers at the mention of a Lexus. But they will do oil changes now.

But overall for a 10yo vehicle I can't really complain much. I've gone through my '04 Vdub from bow to stern and even had the engine on a stand down to a block. My '99 Tacoma has seen everything except motor work.

ummm, it is MY truck, no one else drives :P

I do not think there is any amount of miles on a GX I would be weary of with the proper service history. I just recently purchased mine but I have worked on Toyotas for many years and the 2uz-fe is a legendary motor.

It's not a Land Rover. 100k is nothing. :P

Glad I'm not the only one who seems to hate that term. It used to just be called wheeling, now it's all about marketing and making things out to be more than they are. We are not going wheeling, we are on expedition... To the local KOA... Using the graded fire road...

Thanks for the information everyone. I really appreciate it. I have found one without navigation so far but it had been hit so I passed. I have an active search going through Cars and Autotrader. Any of you get an extended warranty for B2B coverage when you bought used? That's the next internal debate.

Yes, I am a British car guy. My BGT was one of the most reliable cars I ever owned. It took some PM and baselining but it was a Timex. I never did leave home without a comfortable pair of shoes though (never knew when that reliable nature would end and I would end up walking home).

The BJ60 was a million times more worry free than the D1 ever was out could be. Unless it's a pre 83 RRC, Cruisers it will be from here on out.

you said it not me ... I've never cared for the name "overlanding" bc it seems so broad ... like whats the opposite of under grounding ?

not hating on the hobby bc i plan on doing the sir named 'overlanding' one day but I think the term is loosely used ...

big difference in an expedition : (driving from point A to Point B and camping/living from your vehicle supply along the way in a different place every night till you get there)
and there is just camping with your car... and then there is actual "wheeling"... whether its hard or mild
