If my suspicions are correct (see posts 509 & 510), there is the beginning of another shipment here. An 80 showed up in the parking lot, backed in, in the same spot as the previous one and has not been moved since yesterday noon ... it appears to be in pretty good condition, grey in color with the damage multiplier type brush guard. I'll get pics after the rain ends today.

Update 2/20/13: Pic added. No tags on this one, so I am guessing it is headed away on a truck then a boat ....

Haha, you've probably uncovered a theft ring!

Actually, when I bought my previous 100 series, used LCs were being bought up like crazy and shipped overseas, mainly to the middle east from what I was told.

I cannot tell you the number of times I called dealers to be told "we just sold that one for export." In fact, while I was looking at the one I ended up buying, they had an offer from an export buyer ... no it was not a ploy, they showed me the offer and tried to make it a reason for me to pay more.

I know that we should be importing (70 series troopies) :D but it is economics. If an exporter can buy a rig here, ship it overseas, and sell it for a profit (as a whole or in parts), it is going to happen. With RO-RO ships and container ships looking for cargo going away from the US, shipping rates are not cost prohibitive for export.

The typical US buyer (not an educated MUD member) has real heartburn about paying the prices a used, late model LC commands. I know my GF could not believe I was going to pay over $35K for an SUV that was, at the time, 6 model years old with 77,000 miles on it

I saw the same issue recently. Two 100s I went to look at with dealers were sold by the time I got there and they said they were being sold to exporters who walked in and dropped cash and didn't tag them.

Where are they going? Overseas has a lot more land cruisers than America ever got...we should be importing, not exporting.

This is true but there is quite a few reasons why cruisers get shipped out of the US.

#1 Price - this is true of many luxury cars, Jags, BMWs, Caddy's etc (spec out an equal equipped 80 or 100 from Germany or England, some of the only other markets that got the luxury items that we did which has a lot to do with #2, and you will see why many of these used vehicles end up on cargo ships to the middle east and Europe). Used cars are so cheap here compared to other places in the world because of #1 a relatively low cost new compared to many Asian companies (a honda civic in Vietnam can cost upwards of 80k) and #2 the sheer number of new cars Americans buy every year in contrast to all other developed countries helps to drive down the price of a used cruiser v.s. a used cruiser in Europe

#2 Luxury - while there is one luxury item (the center console fridge) that we didn't get here, all cruisers from about 95 up were standard with all luxury items (you couldn't change it). Other places in the world, while they got the winches and the diesels, were all very stripped down and utilitarian.

#3 The middle east has a long history with us of importing cars, even many of their used cars come through dealers over here (although that is shifting to in country dealers and European importers. This came from the Middle Eastern Love of our muscle cars back in the 80's

Followed a nice 80 with a ARB bumper out the airport today and down 485.

Nice rig if you are on here. I was in the big blue ford truck.

Continuing the Saga

When I left work on Friday, there had been a silver / gray 80 and a Tundra parked in the lot for a few weeks (neither with tags). This morning, they were gone, replaced by 2 80s: white and gold.

Shame to see these headed away ...

My mystery loving side says you have uncovered a secret ring of Toyota trafficking, in which covert operatives are forced to work in extreme conditions and INSIST that their respective yotas be allowed incountry. From your parking lot they are written off and all traces of ownership are removed. Then in a country far far away many months from a lonely CIA guy is reunited with his Toyota.

OR it could be like AL said :l

Sorry, I've been with the kid all morn at the doctor..no good magazines.

At the last Triangle meeting one of the guys pointed us to a 100 series for sale over at Spencer's One Stop in Raleigh. We went down there to find out it had just been sold and was headed to Africa... We joked that some down-on-his-luck warlord had to bargain shop LC's in the US. That was a '99 selling for about $10500, IIRC.

Yeah in africa it would more than likely be 2 1/2 that price or more and wouldn't have any luxury items in it.

Keep checking that place out. They seem to get them in on a regular basis.

Hey Terry, thanks for the tip on that place. Thankfully, we found our 100 and we're done shopping.

I also tried your stepdad's method of going back to the dealer and sitting in their lobby until I get my price. Cindy liked an '07 Sequoia at Westgate Chrysler and I went back every day for a week and offered the same price. In hindsight I'm really glad they never accepted.

Well, I'm glad that everything worked out for you. Nice find. I'm sure you guys will love it.

Anyone claiming the white 40 that parks at Whole Foods?

I see it there all the time. Assuming they live in the condos right by it.

Also assume they have the 80 as well that always here.

It's a girl who drives the 40. Look back a few posts and you'll see that I actually spoke with her last month. I'm pretty sure she works right around there, also. Not sure about either of the 80's that frequent the area but Josh has posted about them.

edit: I guess I never posted that I spoke to her. Early to mid-February. I pulled into Phillips Place behind her in my 80 to tell her she had a bad taillight. She barely let me get that out before running off to work. Never responds to any cards, not even from my wife. I think Josh has tried, too.
