Would you be concerned about taking a 100k+ mile 100 on a road trip?

Bought my 2002 last year with 148k on it, gave it an updated oil changeover to synthetic and ran it from Austin to Key West. Didn't burn a drop of oil and averaged 19mpg. Once back however I did have to replace bad CV joints, brakes and repack bearings. All good though. Absolutely no trouble. Check your oil, your brakes, CV's, belts and make sure your timing belt's been done on schedule and you should be good.
 
My '99 towed a 5000# race trailer [plus another few hundred # of tools and supplies in the rear] up and down the east coast every summer since new. High temps, large load, lots of hills. Absolutely rock solid reliable, with nothing more than routine maintenance stuff. Most of this was well past 100K miles, and some past 200K miles.
 
I have a 100 I bought with 139,000 miles on her and all maintenance done......I drive her every day and she has all the bumpers, winch, tires, etc on her. I have also driven her 1500-2000 miles round trip with no issues. Yes I had to replace CV Axle one time but that was not due to long trip or anything other than I changed suspension and the different angle causes it to rotate in a different pattern and it failed faster. Would have happened anyhow...


I am planning on driving mine to Colorado for a wheeling trip to Ouray soon as well....so to answer question:

If all maintenance has been done, it is checked out with nothing looking to be needing repair soon.....then why not.
 
I'm at 158k and don't know the service history before I bought mine with 152k miles. After going through a few things, I would drive anywhere, anytime. I think the TB has been done, but am not even sure of that. Until I have the funds I plan to drive the wheels off and hope that I'm not the first case on MUD of a broken timing belt!
I've always owned Toyotas. My last was a 96' Tacoma which had 284k miles when I got rid of it. Even with those high miles I would have (and did) drive anywhere.
 
I'm always lurking on this side from the 80 series side. I had 182000 on my 80 series this summer when the wife, 2 kids and I did a 2190 mile road trip. The only thing I was concerned about was the fuel mileage. In all it only cost just shy of $700 for fuel. Thats alot cheaper then 4 plane tickets. This coming summer we are planning a 4000 mile trip.
 
In a heartbeat if maintenance done. But that does mean ALL maintenance as described in your manual. belts and hoses and brakes etc. Your engine and tranny aren't going to fail. I took my fj62 at 250K into the Sierras in mid summer for about 800 miles - didn't even hesitate (yes, wife couldn't part with her 100,sniff sniff) - but.....all maintenance was up to date. Lost a few parts like heat shields due to lack of roads, though - badges of courage.

I'd leave on a cross-country trip in either my 150k LC or 105k 4R in a second. They drive like the day I brought them home.

I did 10k in 4 weeks in the 4Runner and 2k in 7 days in the 4Runner, just recently.

Utah - Over Thanksgiving, I drove mine down from Boise to SoCal, watching the odo click over 140K and kept a rolling. I did burst a tire and gash a second, but I don't harbor bad feelings against my '02 hundy for it. My biggest issue with the drive was making sure I knew where all of the gas stations or bathrooms were through Nevada!

I personally think these types of threads reinforces how great these vehicles are. I love to hear how others use and abuse them and they keep on tickin. I started this thread because I need some reinforcement. I thank the members that have shared their experience with their 100's that have over 100k miles.

I've noticed that a lot of Texican work crews, contractors, etc are driving old Tacomas, Tundras and Sequoias. Probably long after the original owners moved onto the next big thing. I'm sure my previous 3 Sequoias are driving around not maintained nearly as well as I took care of them.

Bought my '05 LC a couple of months ago with 119k miles and didn't think twice. Drives and looks like new and people can't believe it's seven years old with over 100k miles on it. It's my DD and take the family on many long road trips during the year. Northern CA trip next summer.

Wife drives a '05 Lexus LS430 with over 130k miles and it also drives and looks like new.

I wouldn't own anything other than a Toyota product. I'm a mechanical engineer who appreciates well-built hardware.

Have a 99 with 147 on it...Take 1000 mile road trips consistently in the summer. Usually each trip is 1000-1500 miles long. No hesitation. Drives great...Really a joy.

For fun, I switched over the odometer to keep track of my trip mileage. A buddy and I head down the desert for a few days. He asked what mileage was on the truck. I said...Not sure...let me check...Oh, I just past 145,000 on it. He had to look to verify. He said...so smooth, nice, solid, etc. Are you serious. He thought the rig was a few years old. Not 13!!!!

Bought my 99 LX with 147k; best move I ever made - I baselined it immediately after buying it. Nearly 200k on it now - I'd drive it across the country without hesitation - it literally drives like new - I know a lot of people just say that, however for those with high mileage cruisers I can tell you it's likely actually true. Good luck on your trip!
 
I traded in a newer truck with less than 30k for a 100 with 92k- for it's reliability! Just did 3200 miles in the rockies with a pregnant wife. Yeah, I trust it.
 
Similar to what others have posted.

'99 LC purchased over 7 yrs. ago. 137k on the clock, took it on a 1,600+ mile road trip this summer through NV, OR, and CA. No problems.

Recently a neighbor told my wife he really liked the LC (he owns a new Dodge Ram 1500) and was shocked to find out how old it is since he thought it was just a few yrs. old.

We almost got an LS 430/460 last yr. for the same reason we purchased the LC. But I couldn't convince :princess: that rear wheel drive with traction and stability control was doable in the winters here.

Oh well... Check out Paul May's 100 over on Equipt. Earlier this year he took it down to Central America - it looks like his LC started the trip with over 237k and he reportedly hadn't "changed a hose yet."

Of course YMMV!
 
One spare part to carry along is a coil pack. If you have to stop by a dealer for this part, it's a $250 job and you can buy the part and change it out yourself for <$100 and 15 mins labor.
 
197k and been taking it on extended road trips since I purchased it 6 years ago with 100k on the clock. Best vehicle I have ever owned.
 
This thread was started as a joke right? Just about every vehicle I've owned has had more than 100K on it Toyota or otherwise and would not have hesitated to take any of them accross country from the F150 to the Accord to the Wrangler to the Neon, and even the Land Cruiser. They all need maintenance, They will all break eventually. Some more than others.
