Looking for ideas/experience how to best setup a phone mount (magsafe iphone charger/holder with 20mm/17mm ball) attcahing it to FJ60 dash. Perhaps using a metal plate covering a dash cubby hole? Thanks!

I fought with this mentally for the last 3 years I've had my 60 since I like clean and simple phone mounts that are high on the dash face so easy to see without looking down but I never found a great solution and I didn't want to put it directly on the dash. All options on the dash face would interfere with radio or vents. Recently I broke down and did a windshield mount nice and low just to the right of the cluster so the phone sits right above the front edge of the dash. I have a magbak case and use a magsafe ring mount to attach.

I just bought this, but I'm not home and haven't installed ... https://overlandcustomdesign.com/products/oh-s***-handle-mount

Would like to replace the ashtray with a metal plate that has ram balls on it.

I replaced the bottom bolt in the oh s*** handle w/ a longer bolt through a ram ball, and I have a ram mount attached. Works pretty good, cable routing is a little annoying. I like it because it's totally reversible and there's no weird non-stock stuff, and it doesn't interfere with anything.

When I did the build on my 60 I welded nut plate into the a pillar to screw a Ram ball into. You could do similar with a Rivnut/Nutsert.

I use the SP Connect brand as I like how it’s compact vs the RAM mount. I also use this setup on my motorcycle so it’s nice to have one system for multiple uses. Mount is located on my center console:

I got a dash mount bracket from cruiser head that I use for the sniper display. For my phone I got an aluminum switch blank that goes in my cruiser head 3D printed bezel and I just use a MagSafe mount. Super stable, but the phone mount does kinda block the ash tray.

OK ... I have 2 options to add.

Edit: Forgot to add pics.

I drilled a couple of holes for a Ram ball mount just below the oh s*** handle. Also have another magnetic mount Ram ball on the tuffy console.

Not a bad idea. I’m going to see how these do for now.

Ordered this set up from 67 designs in Dallas. Mounted under A Pillar handle, lower bolt. Similar to first picture. My phone is a little closer to handle, so I can hold onto handle with most of my left hand for stability, and use index finger to tap screen. Also have gotten much better about using dictation/transcription while driving.

Where did you get the USB port? Is it a custom size?

That’s a nice mount, who makes it?
TIA.
Pretty sure I have the same setup. The piece that goes under the grab handle is from Overland Custom Designs. The ball, arm, and mount are from 67 Designs, I think. I ended up adding a non-charging mount for the phone from Trackform.

That’s right. Overland makes the silver piece you can barely see. 67 Designs makes the arm and mount for the MagSafe Charger from Apple. Holds really well.
