Nice work! My question to you is, was the compressor pulley making noise? Maybe I missed that part in your thread. I have an 84 which came to me without the belt attached and all hoses disconnected. The one thing I noticed with my pulley is it spins freely, like fairly easily. Any idea if that is normal?

Definitely normal. If you look at yours, there should be a clutch plate that attaches to the shaft of the compressor in front of the pulley. The pulley and bearing sit on a boss (that silver cylinder in the center, the threaded post is the compressor shaft) that is concentric with the shaft and part of the compressor body. When you hit the AC button in the cabin, that energizes an electromagnet pulling the clutch onto the pulley, mating them together and driving the compressor shaft. This cycles on and off based on the pressure in the system.

The part that's making a little noise is the inside of the pulley rubbing on part of the electromagnet assembly - it may be slightly out of round or something but it still works fine. You can see the witness mark down below.

Wow, very detailed explanation..thank you! Makes me even more curious why whoever disconnected all of my AC bits did it.

Just driving this thing like a normal car - put on about 600 miles or so since I got it registered and insured. No big issues to speak of. Cleared all the old brake fluid earlier today from both the brakes and clutch. Filled the tank all the way for the first time last week, no issues with leaks or anything. Smell is basically gone, AC works nice, it's a regular car again.

Basically just need to replace all the coolant lines and have the radiator rodded out and the tank repaired permanently (JBWeld fix is holding but would rather have it repaired properly), and do the knuckles when I have some time and cash. Should also probably do the tie rod ends and have the steering box rebuilt. May do the headliner and carpet, but it's not immediately needed.
 
Pulled the radiator today. Time to get it over to the radiator shop and repair the top tank and have it rodded out. I pulled the JBWeld repair right off without much effort...

And the corresponding part of the tank where it was affixed. Pretty easy to see the small crack this was holding down. That may have been a little bit of brazing or solder that was affixed to the JBWeld.

So many turds in that bottom sill. Gross. The other side is full of crud, just needs to be cleaned out.
 
Delayed - busted a stud on the fan clutch when I went to put the fan back on after cleaning all the junk and goo from the previously leaking PS pump. Should have it back in service tomorrow.
 
Done. This was after climbing up the big hill on the 210 east heading home from Costco, 95* and 90% humidity, air running full go. I put in a lower temp thermostat from Mark @65swb45, after we chatted about replacing the gaskets between the two halves and connecting to the block.

I also installed a Kenwood head unit that I had on the shelf from one of my previous projects, that has a CD player and a USB port for MP3s. Sounds great but need the proper DIN cage and trim for it, so that's on the way. I wired in a standard 16-pin Toyota pigtail for head units 1987-2002 scavenged from the junkyard, and then used a Metra Toyota female connector wired up to a Kenwood plug to connect the radio. I have a habit of changing head units a LOT, and this will make that much easier in the future if I go that route.

I ended up running new stand-alone wires for the front speakers. The stock harness shared ground doesn't play nice with a modern head unit amplifier. I figured this out with the third head unit I installed, noting that the front speakers sounded like sh!t at volume while the rears (direct runs from the 6x9s to the head unit + and -) sounded great.

Fortunately I just reused the stock wiring for the front speakers, which DO have individual lines for positive and negative - they pop out of the door right at the top of the footwell on either side, with a plug to connect to the main harness in the cabin. I just ran some new speaker wire from the radio harness to each of the plugs, stripped the insulation off some female push connectors, and used those to connect them to the wires heading into the door.

Anyway - it all sounds good and looks good. Rig drives great and nice and cool. Back to DDing the rest of the week and (probably) taking it camping next week.
 
Couple things yesterday and today. Got after the reverse light no-worky problem, turned out to be our Deadmau5 friends again. This is sort of a pain to get to, pulling seats, carpet, etc. OEM was $80 for a $25 Rockauto switch, holy crap. But the rig was apart, and wanted to get it done, so pay the man and move on. Fortunately the lights work great, don't have to chase any busted / chewed wiring further down the harness.

I had the new carpet backing hanging around in the back of the truck, so decided to install that while it was out. And while the carpet was out, discovered water in the passenger footwell. Turned out to be just a loose clamp at the firewall squirting just enough coolant to dribble down the inside and into the cabin, phew. Thought I was in for a heater core, fortunately not. You can see my radio wiring in this pic, this all stuffs up under the dash.

Still chasing a bit of stink but it's pretty localized to one part of the carpet right between the front seats. I think the carpet backing is just a temporary solution, I'll have to replace the whole carpet eventually.

De-flared. Removed about 40 tek screws, will go back and paint the inside of the holes later. Looks MUCH better, just need to swap the wheels for stockers. If anyone wants to trade lmk!
