So I'm going to do a compression test today - seems easy enough - the only question I have is do I need to stop fuel from getting to the carb? I saw a video that showed clamping of the fuel line to the carb to stop fuel flow. My only issue is my fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb is a hard line. If I do need to stop fuel from getting to the carb, any suggestions with my hard line? Thanks!

Okay did my compression test. Here are the results:
Dry test #1
132-135-137-129-105-150
Dry test #2
140-137-140-135-117-151
I decided to only wet test #5 since all the other numbers seemed pretty good. The result was 106, close to the initial low reading. Bad exhaust valve? What should I do next?
And here you can see my spark plugs are a little fouled up but not covered in sludge.

Decided to do some heat mitigation and insulated the entire floor. We’ll see if it works. Definitely a bit time consuming pulling the driver seat, subwoofer, rear heater, and ammo box and then putting it all back together (how is it that reinstalling the seat is a major chore? The holes lined up the first time!). I still have the upper firewall to do that should be interesting.
Oh and became a contortionist as the boot on the brake booster had come off. I had to lay down put my head under the brake and clutch pedals and then got both hands up there and was able to get it back on. Good thing the seat was out!

Need advice regarding low compression/white smoke
Readers digest version - after not being able to figure out how to put engine to TDC I checked gaps while running. Wasn’t so scary. Intake #5 was definitely out of spec. Adjusted - doesn’t take much. Restarted and checked. Was good. Checked all valves while I was at it. All good. Not much oil on me. Took out all spark plugs. Did compression check on #5 - 130! Woohoo! Reassembled. Drove it. Feel good.

Glad to hear it.
Good job. In my limited experience, I’m starting to think these engines cannot be killed by conventional means.

And interestingly enough my spark plugs are now more beige... I’m thinking the altitude caused it to run a bit rich hence the dark carbon. Now back at sea level-ish and driving it some seems to be getting it to burn correctly?

I like that pic your daughter did, great composition. Did your daughter use actual black & white film, or was it digitally changed to black & white? I did some black & white photo, developing, and printing before digital cameras were even thought of.

Well I’ve been doing the vintage ad stuff in lieu of the insulation project. What a royal pain in the ass that is. Seriously I think that I could’ve pulled the engine and everything off the firewall and sprayed it with the Lizard Skins ceramic coating more quickly that I did stuffing insulation behind all the crap in the cab. Yes, I know that some frown upon insulation as it can harbor moisture but this isn’t a deep creek crosser nor do I operate it in the rain often. Plus I’ve now replaced every gasket and only the front door weatherstrip is the remaining foam/rubber left. I feel pretty good about it’s ability to keep water out-ish. Also, I really like having the roof back on so heat mitigation is going to be key. I’m closer to being done though as I got the tough/critical center section done. Only the drivers side is left thankfully!
Speaking of vintage, I took out the speaker holder in the glove box (yes I insulated the firewall inside there) and found a couple of old items tucked in there. One is a blank check, the account holder name is Terry Thomas from Cupertino. I think this cruiser must have never left the South Bay as I bought it from a guy in Santa Clara and I found some old registrations from I think one or two others down there. Sure wish I could track the PO’s down that would be neat. You can tell it is an old check they didn’t even include the area code!
And this rolled up photo:
If anyone knows that person or the woman in the photo please let me know! Yes, big long shot considering these items could be 40+ years old.
And the decal application continues @orangefj45 ...
