Actually it’s not what you think
The last step of the turbo process is to pour some into the oil inlet fitting to the turbo. This is to make sure the turbo isn’t run dry before the oil pump can do its thing to get oil into it.
Well it doesn’t take much oil at all. Maybe a tablespoon-ish. Then you run the fitting in and then the oil supply hose. Start the truck and drive with a grin. That’s what is supposed to happen. *someone* didn’t realize how quickly the oil port would overflow so the oil not only overflowed and ran down the downpipe AND into the turbo blanket
So that smoke and wonderful smell is despite all the efforts to clean up the mess, no one bothered to check the turbo blanket. Comedy ensues.
Now I’m not going to put anyone but let’s just say there was plenty of embarrassment all around and let’s just use this as a learning lesson m’kay.
