Ok the old motor that I pulled cranked when I turned the key. Now the new motor that I have since put in doesn't crank from the key. I am trying to find the correct place for all the wires from the firewall and the silenoid and the coil so that I have everything connected correctly. (duh right) I though I got everything back the way it was before but I guess not. I have looked under the ignition switch under the dash and have been able to find 3 or those 4 wires. I believe that I have two of them over by the starter coming out of the loom, one is a black with a yellow stripe and the other is black with a white stripe. One looks like it goes to the distributer by the look of the connections and the other I'm not sure as to where it went/goes. Also can anyone tell me what the two points on the silenoid are. I know the big one is the positive from the battery and then there is one below that one which is a blade connection and one to the right that is a phillips head screw. Would be great to be able to find out which goes where and where the pos and neg connections to the coil go to as well. I've tried all the diffent options that I can think of. I'm starting to think that I'm missing the power to the ignition/key switch. I believe the starter is good because I can use a screwdriver and force the motor to crank, when I touch the screwdriver between the big pos cable and the small blade connection. Any help would be great.

This is how mine is. +batt to starter. One wire from starter to +side of coil(for cold starts) other side of starter is from the Ignition switch. Suspect igintion wire is Black/yellow(not sure) Only wire to the dizzy is usually black and from neg side of the coil.

natvet, tried the above connections and nothing new happend still no power to the ignition switch and nothing happens anywhere else. Still can crank the motor with the screwdriver trick though.

The black wire with white stripe goes to the pull in coil of the solenoid. It is the "start" wire from the ignition switch.

There are a number of small black wires with yellow stripe. One is the "Ignition" wire from the key switch which would go either to the + side of the ignition coil or to the ballast resistor (if you have one). On some years there is another black/yellow wire near the starter that is the ballast resistor by pass wire. It goes from the solenoid to the coil + post. When it is disconnected on both ends, it won't be hot with the key on. I'm not sure that this was used on a '71.

Did you check the fuseable link?
Do you have power going to the alt ?
It seems to be a connection brake in the main circit.
Check for power in B/w wire and trace it back till you find it.
The B/w is live with ignition (start) postion , that goes to starter
B/y live with ignition (On) goes to + side coil.
Black - side coil to the points.
Your connection are correct.
I took too long in my reply, you guys are fast.

On 71s the main power feed for the entire truck connects to the battery cable at the starter lug. It is a large white wire with a large ring terminal. Maybe you forgot to hook that up?

Pinhead yeah the white wire is the one I missed my dumb a$$ connected it to something else. oops. As far as everything else I think I have everything set the way everyone is posting here. The only question I have not completely figured out is the neg - off the coil. It goes to the dizzy or does it go to a seperate ground?

guess it was a good thing that I broke the Silenoid when trying to put the fuse box hot into the mix. Get the new Silenoid this morning and it had a connection that the old one did not. Hmmm. Anyhow the motor cranks now. Still can't start it due to the motor not running for close to a year. But anyhow the wire delema.

Blade connection on the Silenoid goes to the positive on the coil.
Positive battery goes to the top lug on the silenoid along with positive for the fuse box (white wire).
Silenoid connection on the engine side goes to the Black/yellow wire on ignition.
Black white wire (ignition) goes to the pos side of the coil.
Negative on the coil goes to the dizzy.

It is a solenoid.

The "extra" solenoid connection is for the ballast resistor bypass wire, which you don't seem to have. This is a black wire with yellow stripe. If you don't have a ballast resistor, you don't need it.

The black wire with white stripe goes to the solenoid. This is the "start" wire from the key switch.

The longer black wire with yellow stripe is the ignition wire and it goes to the coil +. It is how when the key is on ignition.

The negative ost of the coil goes to the distributor on points style distributors.

Pictures might help because it isn't clear what you have.

I'm loading a picture from my phone of what I've got can anyone post a pic of this ballast resistor so I know what I don't have. Cause I've got it to where it will crank the way I have it but won't without both the blk/yellow and the blk/white. hmmmm

Picture from my phone

This picture was taken yesterday before we got the wiring right. This is just one of the wiring variations.

It will crank with only the black/white wire connected to the solenoid, but you have to have it connected to the correct terminal. You don'thave any visible ballast resistor; it is usually attached to the coil. You have a lot of not stock wires, which may be why there is some confusion about the wires.

all the stock wires were worn through the wires that are added are just the coil to silenoid now. The others are stock the blue one was just a test wire trying to figure stuff out. the other one up at the positive to the coil is something electric to my carb and the black with blue spade connector came that way from the PO I don't know what the hell it's for.
