An escalator is a pricing tool that adds revenue by increasing a suggested price by "X" percent. As manufacturer list prices are "suggested", the dealer is free to ask whatever he wants for it. Often dealers choose to "bump up" the selling price a bit.
Before you twist off, remember that the margins are not very strong to begin with. That being said, some dealers do get a bit excited
