My 2017 LC 200 will need front windshield replaced secondary to crack from road debris vs glass. I have a zero deductible for comprehensive, however, insurance company does not cover OEM glass windshield replacement. I will be out of pocket $575 for OEM. Is there a substantial difference in quality of OEM vs safe lite equivalent?
Thanks

Check the other numerous threads on this. Common theme: avoid Safelite!

See page 209 of manual:

●Do not replace windshield with a non-genuine windshield.
Contact your Toyota dealer.

Since Toyota recommends due to PCS safety sensors to only use factory glass, tell your insurance they need to cover it.

You need to fight insurance company on most things. Don't take no for an answer. I just put a toyota windshield in my 20. Final cost was around $1500. $980 list on windshield and toyota changed 450 to recalibrate it. State farm paid all except my 100 deductible.

Do OEM Glass and thank me later. I know it sucks to be out of pocket but when the after market leaks, whistles, rain sensor won't work, front camera won't calibrate....molding is a little off, you get the poInt. Make sure they order the appropriate trim pieces as well.

how can you identify an OEM vs non-OEM windshield?

True OEM glass has a Toyota stamp. I think most if not all Land Cruiser glass is made by AGC. I have also seen Toyota and Lexus factory glass made by Pilkington. OE equivalent is made in the same factory or factories as OEM, but no car manufacturer logo, Nd may or may not have the same specs (thickness, tint, etc.).

This.
My pilkington panel is holding up well to rocks/gravel, but the rain sensor bracket isn’t parallel to the glass and the VIN window doesn’t line up. Also the wiper defrosters don’t seem to work quite like they should. All of these things wouldn’t be the case with an OE panel.

Non OEM glass is made in China.
Fuyao is a brand Safelite likes to use.

I just replaced mine, a nightmare with SAFELITE, do not go there. They don't use spacers so the glass sits too low and does not line up properly with the surrounding rubber. That's just one issue. Sloppy work banged up and bent trim too. I have since called my local Toyota dealer who seemed very knowledgeable? He told me they use Pilkington and he claims they make the glass for Toyota and brand it as such. What's even more interesting is he quoted me $475 for a new Pillkington windshield and Safelite charged my insurance company $580. for the Fuyao. The bottom line is whoever installs it needs to know what they're doing, it's not a Subaru!

Most dealers outsource, they don't replace them themselves, but usually use a competent installer. Not a bad way to go, but probably cheaper if you can find out who they use and go to them directly.

The Pilkington glass is good glass, but is NOT the same as the AGC that comes on the Cruiser. I had my windshield replaced a few years ago, the shop told me the Pilkington they got in that my insurance would pay was the same thing after I requested OEM. I had them measure the glass thickness and they confirmed the Pilkington was thinner. And anything other than OEM may cause issues with the PCS system. This alone caused my insurer to change their mind and cover OEM glass.

The Pilkington is probably fine, but I'd personally stick with actual Toyota glass to ensure the PCS, defrost for wipers, etc. is operating perfectly. Even non-Toyota branded AGC (this would be OE equivalent, not OEM)may be different, as it may not be built to every exact spec Toyota contracts them to make for OEM.

South African Bureau of Standards GREAT.jpg

I'm happy to see the SABS seal of approval.

" The South African Bureau of Standards, or SABS, is a certification body accredited by South African National Standards, or SANS. The SABS Certification Mark acts as a third party guarantee of a product’s quality, safety, and reliability, assuring consumers that the products conform to specifications based largely on ISO / IEC 17065. SABS doesn't mean much. It is similar to SAE J673-201506. Yes, it means the manufacturer submitted for testing and it passed minimum safety and quality protocol. It doesn't tell you if the glass matches OEM spec, if the defrosted wipers is in the right spot and will operate to spec, etc. But it will be safe, but so will any other glass that is allowed for sale in the U.S.
The other half of the equation is who installed it. Only use a installer who follows AGRSS standards at a minimum.

It is available as a separate part for $25-30. I tried replacing mine to make the rain sensor fit better and get rid of the bubble but it didn’t work.. the issue is the metal bracket not being parallel on my pilkington panel.

Good info here.
