I've been looking and looking, so please excuse me if this has been talked about. I have a '74 FJ40 with the old windshield hooks. Unfortunately the hooks are missing when I purchased it. I can obviously buy the newer style hooks and pad, but what are people doing with the existing holes for the old latch system? OR where can I find the older hooks? I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Thanks

i have a 1974 and dont know what your asking...pics please
I hope I can explain this well. The first photo is my hood. The second photo is what I think the hook setup should look like, however I can't find this style of hooks (they seem to be discontinued). The 3rd photo are the hooks I can find, and from later models. First question, can I find the original setup? If so, where? If not, and I am forced to use the newer hooks and setup, what do I do with the old latch to which the newer hooks won't attach to anymore? My understanding is that the newer style hooks attached directly to the pad and not towards the front of the vehicle with the older latch. In other words, the newer setup has TWO parts, the hook and the pad. The older setup has THREE parts, the hook, pad and forward facing latch.

get used...

or use the newer... thats what I have .... and just slot the back of the holder that bolts to the hood using a die grinder.... or leave as is... in 25+ years I have only had the windshield down several times :meh:

Thanks. Just to be clear, you use the newer, and you've left that 3rd latch piece on the hood but you don't use it? As you have the hooks attached to the pad correct? OR you can (as you say) use a grinder to cut a larger hole in the hook so it can also attached towards the front in the original latch spots?

You can check with Georg at Valley Hybrids (@orangefj45) here on Mud, or Mark (@65swb45) as both of them have some decent sized cruiser boneyards to pull parts from. They might be able to provide you with used hooks that fit. You'll have to track down Mark's phone number though, I know it's on the forum somewhere. I think phone is the best (only) way to get in touch with him!

Thanks #RWBeringer4x4, I'll send them both a PM

I'm not bent on using the old setup, I just wonder what alternatives there are using the newer hooks. Are people modifying the hooks so they hook towards the front of the vehicle OR are they just not using that 3rd latch piece? OR taking them off and filling in the holes?

To actually clip them to the windshield I think you need to die grind the holder just a tad so the hook can reach just a bit back further... I didn't try to ... Because like I said it was very rare that I ever do that... So it wasn't a concern for me

I just purchased the CCOT hooks for my 74 and OEM rubber bumpers from Onur. Worked perfect. I'm not close to my rig, no pictures... Can post tomorrow. CCOT part number SW-5843-BSlot. I think they are the same black ones you have a picture of above.

What did you do about the 3rd latch part? Did you just leave it there unused or did you remove it?

The CCOT hooks I bought bolt to the hood and hook to the holder spot welded on your hood. The bumpers bolt through the 2 holes left. No offense but I think it's easier than you're making it.

The new OEM hooks work on the 74 setup just fine. The mounting base for the new ones are slightly different but the holes still line up. You can also buy the rubber bumpers too but dang they're expensive. I'll have to look at my thread as I posted photos of the setup.

You know I may have misspoke - I will have to look again. I've never had my windshield down so have never used he hooks. I think they actually won't work seeing that they have to go back towards the windshield. Funny never paid that close attention to them.

@ginmtb - definitely need the hooks that allow the hook to go both directions. The newer hooks are made to latch straight to the bumper (like the one JohnnyC posted up). The later models did not have the welded hook hold on the hood.
