I am rebuilding my Warn 8274 and am at the point of puttign in the oil. It calls for 30w gear oil. Is that different than 30w motor oil? If it's different, and I can't find that, I've read recommendations to mix Gear oil with ATF. Those of you that mix, what is the ratio, and is it okay to use straight 90w gear oil with the ATF?
It actually calls for 6oz straight 30 wt non-detergent motor oil like you might put in a lawn mower. I don't think it matters at all. I used straight gear oil on the first one I went through about 5 years ago and it's still going strong. I recently got another (last week), and I used 0-40 synthetic motor oil because it was open and handy. I used 10oz of oil because 6oz hardly shows in the case. I put more than that in the first one and it leaked a bit at the drum seal.
If it really mattered, I'd likely use 75w-90 synthetic gear oil. It would cover all the bases. If it's cold where you live, a synthetic oil of some type is going to be better, since it won't gel in the cold.

Doh! Thanks for all the input. I should have read the instructions closer. It clearly said SAE 30w. But somehow I kept reading 30w gear oil. Which thanks to the link, I now know would be the consistency of milk, and probably not provide much protection.
I went with the 30w non detergent oil, and added a good amount of the Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer. You know when you go into the auto store and they have the little gear box with oil and gears in it and you turn it be hand and the one side with strait oil and one side with lucas additive, and you can watch the oil get pulled up to the top gear much better with Lucas. Well that is the perfect example of a warn winch inside, the oil only gets to the top by riding up the gears. So I added the Lucas stuff based on playing with that while waiting to pay.
