Belleview Warn Winch on fj40??

I have a great story about a Unimog. I'd love to have one.
This guy had a pretty impressive collection of cars. I can’t post pics, but he had a US legal U500 unimog and it was absolutely the biggest vehicle I’ve ever seen. It was awesome.

I will likely have to sell a few things to afford this 406, but it’s well worth it.

So I was stationed at the father's day beerfest in Obersteinfelt as a generator operator. The 10kw genny powered the lights and other stuff (real Germans don't pay to chill beer, want cold beer then only drink in the winter). I switch the genny over to 240 V and back off the governor twice as many turns as it took to drop it to 55 hz from 60. I don't remember a lot about the beerfest because it was free beer for the crew, I do have a beer mug from that deployment and a copy of my orders stationing me there.

Anyway so its time to leave and we up everything. The newbe Sgt in charge doesn't listen to me that we should take the long road down the hill not the straight shot. The deuce and half was empty and pulling the generator trailer with several 55 gal drums of gas and the 2 generators. It had rained a lot over the weekend. So we start down the hill in low range low (he at least listened to me about that), about 1/2 way down we start sliding on the clay. At the bottom we cross the road, bust threw a gate, cross the yard and finally stop with a wheel on the front porch of a cabin. Even in all wheel drive it was so slick the truck couldn't move backwards at all.

One of the neighbors comes over and we chain his Unimog to the generator trailer. That guy pull the truck and trailer back up the hill and the truck wasn't even running! He said not to go back down that way and he would fix the gate.

Was able to pick mine up over the weekend. Also may have tentatively struck a deal on a unimog which I am very excited about.

Everything works on the winch which is pretty cool. It was mounted on a unimog and sat in his shop for the last 10+ years.

If memory serves me correctly there was a company that bought out all the parts from Warn covering the Belleview winches. I’ll look to see if I can find the name of the company.

If you use these search terms in Google you’ll be able to see a lot of the Belleview Winch threads on IH8MUD:

I miss my 404’s. Such a capable vehicle off-road in stock form. Just a lousy 45mph top speed on road.

That is awesome

The Belleview winches show up used here in the PacNW fairly regularly, probably because both factories were here.

I have a PTO drive Ramsey winch if you're interested, but shipping would be a killer to the east coast.

I purchased my Warn (previously Belleview) winch in 1974 and it was already being marketed as a Warn Model 8000. It was replaced by the more common Model 8000 soon thereafter and the biggest difference was the power in - power out feature, and the ribbed casing rather than the smooth finish of the Belleview gear casing. It is probably the best aftermarket purchase I have made for my FJ40 during 52 years of ownership and I use it frequently, though not so much for vehicle rescue as for moving heavy objects, like trees and buildings (seriously).

Back in the day it was difficult to find accessory bumpers and winch mounts in my hometown so I took my bumper to the local welding shop and had them attach a massive steel plate to the back side of the bumper and cut holes in it for the mounting bolts and cable run. It cost me $25 (for the bumper mod, not the winch!) and has served me well over the years. I like the look of the original bumper and the winch suits the vehicle well. I do like that it is period correct but that's only because I of when I bought it - not much choice.

Anyway, I recommend the winch but it probably costs me about a mile per gallon in fuel economy. The thing weighs a ton!

As MUD forum luck would have it another member @BDSeff1fitty found one in a double winch deal. He wanted the m8274 winch and this crusty warn belleveiw 8000 came in the deal. He offered to sell it to me. Its going to need a little work to get it nice but seems to be all there. (going to need a pad for the brake.) Ill probably buy a rebuild kit and a new motor along with a cable and hook. It will be my winter resto project.

I am going to contact herm the overdrive guy to see about parts. I contacted Warn about parts and they actually directed me to him!

anybody got any recommendations for cables? and mounting for the fj40? I assume I am going to have to do some fab. I have a winch bumper for a 8274 that came with the fj40 just no winch attached haha.

an update: I got the winch apart cleaned everthing and purchased a few things it needs. I got a new motor coming. just a power in motor. I bought a new 5 inch brake pad, and bought a new brake lever from Belleview Winch Brake Lever - https://brennans-garage.com/products/belleview-winch-brake-lever my brake lever was toast. it was bent and I tried to bend it back using a vice and it snapped instead of bending. I kina guessed it would do that. rust converted the spool and threw some tractor paint on it.

the winch was dirty dirty. For sure had been living outside. the gears all were perfect inside. cleaned the old oil out inspected bearings, greased them and sealed it all back and put new bearings in it. I still will polish it up but it looks loads better.

i still need to buy a cable. and a fairleed. I have some 1/4 inch plate coming so I can mock somthing up to the bumper. I want it to look exactly like @Kayaker above. initially I thought about using my 8274 bumper but I am not sure. it looks so good with the oem one! last step will be installing the cables and power.

I didn't see it mentioned if you plan to actually use this winch for recovery-
I had a Belleview, I did a light resto, upgraded the motor to one that had power in and power out and set up the cable controls. I was also starting to get into increasingly serious rock crawling and after I almost got into a dangerous situation because the Belleview lacks an automatic brake (the ratchet device on the side of the 8274) I took the winch off and found an old 8274 to refresh and install.

Just wanted to mention that while they are old-school-cool, if you actually want to use it you would be better off finding an old 8274. Otherwise have fun restoring it!

wont be doing any rock crawling as I live at the beach on the outer banks. no rocks or hills to drive on really. Thats why I purchased a power in motor only. trying to keep the build cheep. I may in the future upgrade to a 8274 if i need the upgrade.
