Will 4 flywheel bolts do?

If the rest of the bolts snapped wouldnt the flywheel just spin with the clutch and input shaft until the vehicle stopped rolling? I would be more worried about an overspeed of the engine without the weight of the flywheel.

Are you currently working on this truck or do you have someone else doing the work?


There is a very large dowel pin that would need to be snapped off before you would get your flywheel to spin freely on the end of the crankshaft....

Replace the bolts with new OEM bolts...

What, you think snapping four huge bolts is likely, but snapping one dowel pin is impossible? Certainly if the bolts snapped the flywheel could slide rearward enough to disengage or chew up the pin and spin freely.

10mm bolts are not huge. :lol: Even in the grand scheme of things with respect to fasteners on this truck.



I have noticed on these vehicles, when you find a stretched/damaged/broken flywheel bolt, it is very likely that you will find others in the same poor condition in need of replacement.




I did not insinuate nor imply that it is not a possibility of the flywheel falling off the crankshaft. I asked the user if they had been in the truck and looked at how things are configured on the end of the crankshaft. Along with the dowel of roughly .750” diameter, there is a pilot ridge on the end of the crankshaft that supports the flywheel. Could the flywheel fall off? Sure it could. The noise, not just the vibrations generated by the flywheel and clutch assembly being loose would make most folks turn the truck off immediately, and if it didn’t, and they continued to operate the vehicle until something really went wrong, then they have no business operating a vehicle, let alone working on it.

Well, I may be guilty of assuming that the 2F was just like my 3B, but that diameters of the bolts and pin didn't strike me as very different...

The threaded holes in the end of your diesel engine crank look larger than those of the gas F/2F:

I am doing all the work on the truck. I used a torque wrench. Poser - can you answer a question without being a **** please! Chill out man, just shootin some questions around here.
 
Anyway I am replacing the bolts but its gonna take a week to get to the local dealer! So I guess Im at a bit of a standstill...at least Ihave plenty of time to work on the broken ones!

Say you are doing 3000 rpms trying to get out of the mud and dump the clutch going into reverse. You snap the 4 remaining bolts. You get a big vibration. You press in the clutch. The gyro effect on the flywheel pushes it off the pin which then comes off the end of the crank it drops. By this time your 50 lb flywheel spinning at 2900 rps is now off balance. The clutch hub vaporizes as the clutch fork gets pulled through the bell housing chewed up and probably spit out the bottom of the clutch cover. Now you still have a 50lb chunk of metal spinning at say 2000 rpms doing the hoola hoop around your tranny input shaft and bouncing off the bell housing. By this time your pilot bearing has vaporized and the end of the tranny shaft has snapped off. The flywheel will either bend the rest of the input shaft or break it off. If it breaks it off it's going to probably come out some part of the bell housing or cause pieces of the bell housing to grenade through the cruiser. Other people will read this thread years from now. Someone with the same problem. If it's taken lightly someone might be stupid enough to run with fewer than the 6 required. That could potential happen. Safety is not something to fxxx around with. Especially when it's your friends or wheeling buddies or someone on the trail that will have to 1. tow your broken piece of crap off the trail 2. clean up your mess or 3. help stop the bleading and call in the ambulance or heli and still have to do #1 and #2.

If you were in my club and I knew you had only 4 bolts holding the flywheel together. You would be riding in someones rig or not going at all. There is no excuse for ignorance when going with a group. You will ruin their day and yours.

So when you ask a question and you get an answer that sounds a little to harsh. Take it seriously. There is no chilling out.

Looking forward to some pictures and a writeup on how you go the bolts out.

Until I grew my MUD skin, got off MY high horse, and found out his advice is always based on first hand experience, technically accurate, and usually with pics to boot. :D

x2 it is really easy to read poser's posts (and many others on this board) in a condescending tone... but he always speaks backed by some good experience/know how
