I imagine if he let some air out of the rig by opening windows or doors the wheels would have had better purchase on the river bottom. With all the air in the back end he only had his front axle down.

I think the radiator fan was doing more to move him forward then the front wheels!!!
You'd be surprised at how little water there is in the engine compartment, even in deep water crossings.
If he cracked the doors I do believe he would have been doing more driving and less floating. How much wetter would the interior be? Not sure how much of an issue that is to him. My first though after watching (beside how he was "boating") was how much maintenance/fluid changes/knuckle grease/prop shafts etc. he has to do now.
The only issue I could see with popping the doors is that the ECU might have ended up under water and killed the engine. It may have as it was, but keeping the doors shut keeps the water out longer.
The biggest mistake was not enough speed when entering the water. If he'd had more speed, the water would have pushed down some on the hood keeping at least the front tires on the ground longer. Plus higher momentum keeps the water out, as long as the vehicle is moving you don't get water into the cab.
For vehicles that travel mostly/completely under water, the typical setup I see is doors shut, windows down. You probably won't get lifted off the ground until the water hits window level anyway, so it helps keeps some of the water out of the cab. There are some crazy competitions in South America where they travel long range down rivers, or across a deep canal (where they're under completely). Diesels are nice, can stop in the middle of the river, turn the engine off, wade around, hope back in, start back up, and drive off...... (Try that in a gasser when the water is over the hood.)
That was a diesel (likely 1HZ), so there's no ECU to kill.
My assumption was diesel but kinda hard to tell since the exhaust was under water.

maybe not that much but yes .. we are not that worried for ECU or wiring .. we are very careful about proper intake sealing coz water in a diesel engine and you would not tell ..
But been in few deep water crossing down here .. I don't like to go in that situation even with the windows up .. you could have a problem in the middle of .. and due to the nature of the surrounding environment ( water ) some sort of short circuit and you can't open the windows ( of are power windows ) in an emergency you want to have that escape route clear for you ..
And yes .. that's fun .. but after that come all fluids, bearings and grease involved .. from wheel bearings to door hinges ..

It has happened for some but never for me, its all original setup in my front axle except the bearings.
