Had a customer come in In DEC to have 1 of the new Super charger kits installed. We decided to do a head and gasket while there. Boy what a shock we got when we pulled the head.
The PO over heated it real bad and from the look of everything heat seized #6. So it turned into an engine as well. Customer said Lets do a semi restores on the axles and chassis . This beautiful 80 Has a lot of chassis rust. Long story short He has recently has new gears (nitro crap) and arb lockers done by a different shop. When we pulled the air tub for the frt locker a bunch of gear oil came out. . So we pulled the 3rd to inspect it . We found it covered in metal shavings. Even after they did the required 500 mile lube change and a 2000 mile lube change. The cause was a combination of low quality gears and a missed set up. We pulled apart both the frt and rear and rebuilt the almost new lockers and replaced the gears with a fresh set of 488s by revolution.

This was a fun job working with a customer that wanted it right . Every thing on the engine was brand new from Toyota every nut and bolt . I mean everything . We custom made stainless steel brake lines and restored both the frt and rear axle housing. We also treated the under body surface rust the best we could without a body off restore.

We delivered this back to our customer the beginning of march (Yes 12 week turn around time ). He just left the shop after we did his 500 mile engine oil and gear lube change . Along with a Tom woods dble cardon frt drive shaft . Can't wait to get the owners feed back now that the everything is broken in and he can let it rip .

We also found a crack in the track bar mount . We installed 1 of our frame plate kits and of course a 105 redhead steering box

yuup, 25k in parts

Matches what I have been doing on my LX450, except it came with factory lockers, and I put in a 2020 L96/6L90e. There might be less than 10 original bolts left on my LX450... I came across one today, and swapped it..lol

My original rear housing and frame matched his.

Nice work!

This is my rig. Can confirm the work done by Precision Land Cruisers was top notch with amazing attention to detail and care for the truck and customer. raisinhell2 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/members/raisinhell2.189262/ was a pleasure to work with through the entire process. Friendly, professional, and very patient with a newbie to the LC world like me. It's been 15 months since I bought this truck (my first 80). Been thinking about doing a thread on the experience, but haven't gotten around to it. Here are a few observations / lessons learned from the last 15 months as an 80 owner:

- 80's are wonderful, capable, machines, and a lot of fun to own, but they're expensive. No surprise to anyone on this forum, but a lesson I had to learn the hard way.

- The 80 world is full of wonderful, helpful people, but, like the rest of the world, is also populated with rogues, and people whose greed is all that matters to them.

- Sometimes the surface appearance of a truck (clean interior with very low wear, no leaks, low miles (100k), no body rust, bone stock), and an apparently friendly midwestern, retiree seller who insists he's had no major problems with the truck in the 20+ years he's owed it is all just an illusion (see photos above of the cylinders)

- Sometimes a shop with a long term, great reputation can be an illusion. Sometimes a shop like that goes bad and starts caring more about $$$ than its customers or the quality of its work and products. If a shop is giving you the hard-sell on its preferred parts (wheels, drive shafts, springs, etc.,) then be suspicious. Its likely because those parts are the most profitable for the shop and may not necessarily the best option - fit - quality for your truck. If a shop is cold, too focused on business, and hides behind front office sales folks and a fancy show room, then be suspicious, despite their reputation.

- Magnuson Superchargers are worth it, especially if you live and drive at high altitude. The extra power is so worth it.

- LC ADD is real!! I've spent countless hours on this site and others learning about 80s. Way too much time. Love the community here. Especially love the build threads.

- If you're in Colorado, Precision Land Cruisers is one of the best places to take your 80. After two bad experiences (the PO and the first shop I had work on my truck), I count myself lucky that I found raisinhell2 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/members/raisinhell2.189262/ through this forum. Literally saved my truck and possibly me, as it was a catastrophic engine failure waiting to happen. Grateful that didn't happen up on a high country trail somewhere.

- I have more modern vehicles, but have to say I enjoy driving my 80 the most. Love the old school look, feel, and handling of an 80. Can't wait for the snow to melt in the high country.

- Have many plans for my 80 that I'd like to do - front and rear bumpers, shelf system, winch, and a new paint job. They'll have to wait a bit so my budget can recover from the past 15 months. It's a never ending project truck, and that's one of the reasons I love it.

- Has it all been worth it? Definitely. I'll be spending way more time in the mountains and on trails and backroads than I ever would have if I didn't have my 80. That was true last summer and fall, and will be true for the next many, many years to come. Already planning some long cross country expeditions that I would have never imagined before. Retirement can't get here fast enough!

Thank you Wade for the nice write up.. Land Cruisers are a passion for me, even more so the 80 series. I am glad we connected . I didn't realize how much I missed doing custom and restoration work. Even know working with a customer who spends way too much time on MUD can be a pain in the ass haha.. I enjoyed helping you understand the "whys" of what we did and the reasons I use the parts I do.. Don't feel too bad about what the PO did . I was just as shocked as you when I pulled the head and found the bad cyls.

I am glad you discovered it had a head gasket done @ such low mileage and decided to re do it from the start. What a mess it would have been if not. I'm looking forward to the show in May. Because my pictures do not do your rig justice. Plus it lets me drive it again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Thank you for trusting me with your baby It was a pleasure.
