I am on the verge of trading our 15 GX460 for a 17 LC. Seems like when I look at reviews many are bashing the latest LC for not delivering enough value for $. They talk about its non suspended lift gate etc.

Is this just press looking to be contrarian? Am I a fool for making this trade ;)

Don't take the reviews too seriously. They are mostly personal views of the author. You could easily find a favorable review of a Land Rover, but you couldn't give me one.

I read more into the reliability ratings on Consumer Reports, as they are supposed to be based on actual buyers experiences. Unfortunately the 200-series doesn't sell enough, so they have "insufficient data".

Base your decision on things other than reviews. "Reviewers" are paid for writing that sells, and in general "good" news doesn't sell like "bad" news.

Its a global platform. Less moving parts and gadgets the better. People bash because they are ignorant and have yet to appreciate the reliability, versatility and pure enjoyment you can achieve by going anywhere you want with little to no concern at all. The US is sadly Jeep-tarded. Oh well that just equals better resale value forus that have ventured onto the enlightened path.
Good luck

Thanks guys. Have any of you owned GX or LX and moved to LC? If not just give me your ownership experience...

Btw, the one thing that does sit in back of my mind is how my $80k will eventually become $10k! This applies to nearly every vehicle MB S class, Rover, you name it. Except... Ferrari, Lambo which often bottom out at almost 50% - but I digress!

on the one aspect of resale you mentioned...
there is a thread in the 200 specific section of classifieds.

You can get a good feel for what various years/mileage
Id say they get good pretty good resale value

With well maintained 1998 100 series cruisers going for 10k+ I would say its going to be a while on the 200s, as a matter of fact I don't think a well maintained 200 for 10k will ever be available. I for one will be jumping on a few if it does happen though!;)

The Land Cruiser is a body-on-frame, solid-rear-axle, off-road capable SUV. It is truck based (the frame is related to the Tundra).

While it has a lot of off-road capability, that comes at a cost. It is heavy (almost 6,000 lbs). Fuel economy is poor. The solid-rear-axle affects ride over bumps. As a suburban minivan replacement, the Land Cruiser isn't great. There are many crossovers that will do the school shuttle run better than the Land Cruiser.

For those of us who take our SUVs off road, the Land Cruiser provides the capability that we need, and we put up with penalties that result in the on-road handling and ride. For people who don't take their SUV off road, they might be better off with something else.

X2. Yeesh! That post reads like junk mail!

Let the 200 haters hate! We love our 200. It's the beef!

I'm a value guy. It's the reason I'm in a 200, not because I'm rich by any means. If you're worried about depreciation and the "bottom" don't buy at the top. For example someone was looking at a 2014 w/ albeit high miles for around $45k (80k miles) - truck is 3yo. At the bottom, you can compare to a late year 100 series w/ 150k miles, often selling for $20k+ as this truck is now 20 years old and hard to come by in good condition w/ reasonable miles. 200k mile 100s can still fetch $10 - 15k if mint. Given the spike in base price of the 200 it's a hard proposition vs the LX - less LCs on the market in the future, less supply and I think we can all agree there will be a lot of demand for used 200s as the 80s and 100s start to retire. So even if $20k on the bottom for a 20yo 200 series, you're spending $25k to drive it over the next 10yrs/100k miles. So drive an $80k truck for $2,500/yr? I'm in. I'm sure there are other platforms in which this works, but not that provide all the capabilities, and reliability of a LC.

Anyone with concern over depreciation really should look at used....because you almost instantly beat the depreciation beast.

Personally, I can't even imagine buying new as it's just too much for my pocketbook.
-But even if you CAN afford new? -When you can get a MINT used 200 for LESS than a new 4-Runner? ...In my book its a no-brainer that the 200 wins hands-down value-wise.

You just asked the nut house how much like they like nuts...

Speaking as one of the nuts...

I looked really hard at new 4Runners this Spring. I really hate the styling, and the only models I was interested in (TRD Pro, etc) came only in black interior, which I hate. Oh and they were close to $50K. My brother just paid $48K for a Highlander.

Sometimes I wish I wasn't so loyal to Toyota/Lexus. There are a lot of other nice cars out there, but GEEZ these trucks are well made and feel so sturdy.

LC's aren't for most....... and that's the charm. Had a kid tell my wife ( who's taken over the LC recently while I'm travelling) that she had the badest Highlander he'd ever seen......this from the kid shuffling cars at the TOYOTA dealer while she was getting the oil changed......

G's, Rovers and the others are all fun and nice, but I wouldn't want to own any for more then 50k miles...... although the motor and durability of the G were tempting - the attutude associated with the typical owner group can't be overcome....( althought there are a few cool g owners)

The 4runner is lost IMHO until it gets more power.... whey they never put the 460 motor into it escapes me... capable rig but not up to the task if armoured up and loaded.

Enjoy the hunt...

Exactly. That's why buying my mint-condition 2008 with 48K miles on it for $40k (in 2015)... ...made a new 4Runner purchase ridiculous. ;)
You can get a well maintained used 200 and add a locker and suspension for the price of a new TRD Pro 4runner. There isn't anyone out there that can make me believe the 4Runner is a better deal. Its too bad I made the mistake of buying the 4runner the first go around. I had to learn the hard way.
