I actually don’t think they’re likely to grab it again, but it helped me sleep easier
You’re probably right. With that said…you sleeping in it, on it, or in a ghille suit near it tonight?

You need an active security system...

Absolutely. And to avoid having to replace the battery every year, I recommend this case that supplies power for 10 years with two Lithium AA batteries:

HTH

I installed one of these today. Originally I planned to put it behind an interior trim board while I did my 2-row cargo cover install, but eventually changed strategy as I was concerned having it inside the vehicle, attached to a metal panel, may reduce the range. So I opted to put it next to one of the front headlamps.

This is under the plastic radiator cover, next to the driver's side headlamp. I cleaned up the back of the plastic air dam and used the included VHB to attach it, with a cable tie through two drilled holes for good measure. From the outside all you'll see is a zip tie way off to the side of the void in front of the AC condenser. We'll see how good the weatherproofing of these things is.

Next I'll be working on something to hide the VIN. Due to a small flap of rubber attached to the back of the windshield panel, I assume to block dust from the VIN tag, we can't just cover it from above. So I may need something U-shaped to clear the flap. Thinking through my options here.

Also I'll be working on a kill switch..

Sorry for poor lighting

you have a semi pro crew in your area...

now that all the mopar hot hemis have all been stolen with pro pads plus the VIN or had secondary ignition cut switches installed the Toyota are next inline for parts scavenging.

you can clone fobs from a locksmith tool like an xtool tablet without having the original fob then program a $20 amazon blank fob and you are off to the races.

as mentioned- they disconnected the harness to kill cameras or the onstar type tracking.

This isn't a dip**** meth fueled junky job like a smash and grab. it was parked in a cool down area to see if it had a tracking system installed before being moved to a chop shop in 24-48 hours. the charging cords were probably for the programming tablet to stayed powered up while driving or a wave bubble type RF jammer (yeah it is a thing).

tip- shove a post-it note over the dash VIN so it can't be seen externally. It is at least a starting point for security.

Land Cruiser lets us disable the smart key system in the head unit. Also via techstream.
Do you think if the smart key system is turned off they could still interrogate from the outside and emulate to gain access?

@bloc Did you ever figure a good way to cover the VIN?

Not yet. But this is prompting me to make some mockups out of card stock before trying some nylon sheet.

I’ll try to work on it soon.

This sounds like a job for the 3D printer.

Does yours not have the little rubber flap stuck to the back of the panel above the VIN tag?

I tried this with mine and if it clears the flap, it ends up under the tag.

Might as well print a fake vin # on that sticky note  Should slow the crack smokers down.

its on a tundra... but gotta wiggle it

I was messing around with a trim tool. There is a rubber piece above it. Ended up squishing it down to block the VIN.

Then it occurred to me, why not remove the speaker grill. It pops right out.

I'm reading this thread with interest, but I think covering the VIN on the dash will have little-to-no utility. I just used faxvin.com to look up my VIN using the license plate number -- I'd prefer that method over reading a tiny number from up close, if I were a thief.

I'm probably going to want to pursue the disable switch option, if that is straightforward forward enough to do.

Acid vat?
Honey dowsing and left on a red ant hill?
right hand removal?

The other thing regarding the stolen mirrors is the registration is in the glove box having the home address.

A lot of states have two reg cards. One has address and the other does not, CO, for example. I keep the NO ADDRESS reg card in car, and addressed in another location.
