Why an FJ80 over a FZJ80?

I must be an "unreal human being" then, because I don't think I'd mind the lack of power.

Of course, I'm one of those sub-human rural dwellers that fails to rise to the value level of your typical urbanite.

Back to your cave, heathen! :flipoff2:

Everyone that talks about the lack of power of the 3FE has never driven a lifted 22R 4Runner. The 3FE is a powerhouse in comparison, it will rip down the freeway at 80 mph all day long. Sure, it will be screaming at you pulling the pass, but it's not like you are in the slow lane with your flashers on behind the motorhomes.
4.88's and 33's and the 3FE will outrun a 1FZ-FE with stock gears and 33's. At least on flat ground.

I started out wheeling in a 22r carb'd pickup. When I drove my first 60 with a 2F and a H42, I thought it was a powerhouse by comparison, and it was (anything would be). But now I'm old and have a little bit of money and have driven a multitude of cars that actually get out of their own way. I don't think I could go back to life in the slow lane. Specifically when it comes to driving over some of Colorado's highway passes. Around town and flat land performance is much easier to come by.

I could see why nobody would want a 3FE in the Rockies. Shoot, I-70 made my 480hp Duramax feel puny.

I had both at one time. I had more fun with my 1991, no air bag and I could let my son drive it. Also, I didn't mind bashing it a little.

I own a 3Fe I've worked on both I'll take the 3Fe durability, simplicity, bombproof ness over the fze anyday no timing belt or chain no aluminum head no antilock, fuel filter is a lot easier to get to,the fzj is a great 80 I guess it's what you like,I like mine simple I also like the dash of the fj80 more than the fzj, both require the same maintenance,of course the 3Fe valves need adjusting more but I like to do that ,which ever one you pick you can't go wrong,it's an 80. 3Fe all the way ....... I'm just saying

And by the way I have no problem at all finding any parts for my 92 just make sure you use oe parts no China zone ,my 3Fe runs strong and has a lot of power and is smooth but I maintain it well

I honestly wonder how many people that say the 3FE is underpowered have ever actually driven one. My 92 runs out fairly well for a 6000lb tank.

I will say that the 1FZ-FE was a slug going up some of the mountains on the way back from California. It wasn't like it was a rocket ship.

I'm going to have to do a 0-60 in my 93 to compare it to my 92. My 92 was about 13 seconds IIRC.

And I do maintenance on it but I have never adjusted the valves. Have the original fuel filter and injectors.

Call a buddy over, line em up, it's race time.
It would be the most uneventful drag of all time.
But would have to have a video.

It would be funny to do a stop motion drag race of two 80s.

So many point to no abs, cloth seats, obd 1 as selling points for the fj over the fzj.... There is a bridge. More power and less complication. 93-94 fzj

I specifically chose a 93-94 if I was going to buy a 1FZ-FE for that reason. But it still is an iron block with an aluminum head...

Do you really think you're even antagonizing anyone?
Antagonizing was never my intentions. I merely posted my opinion & he got a chapped ass over it. :moon: I guess it chapped your ass, too, for some reason. :princess:

I bought a 1991 new off the lot. Drove it for three years then bought a new 1994.
Back in the day when both trucks were new there was no comparison in acceleration and stopping improvements with the FZJ. Most people on this forum never had the pleasure to drive an FJ80 or FZJ 80 new in their heyday.

That's understandable @ToothDr. I bought my 92 new. Own another 92 with no discernible difference in performance between the two. And have owned 5 1FZ-FE 80s (3 93-94, 2 95-97). All of the 1FZ-FE have been 150k+ rigs. Maybe they don't hold up as well as the 3FE...Or are more finicky regarding maintenance and loss of power.

I really want an FZJ but I'm not going to lie, when I get one I'll be worrying about overheating/HG issues.
