I just got around to changing my fan belts and found that there are 2 alternator/fan belts. Is this just a redundant belt setup in case one breaks in the middle of afghanistan or something? Just curious?

I think it is for redundancy. Hopefully you used the OEM Toyota belts as they are much quieter than the parts store variety.

I did use the OEM belts due to all of the reading that I have done here. I thought that they were pretty resonable at $30 for both of the fan belts and the AC belt. The Toyota coolant on the other hand seemed to be a little more expensive at $15 a gallon. Does this price seem in line with what you have paid? Then again a little more money for coolant is a lot cheaper than a headgasket. Now I just have to do a search and find where the plug in the block is to change the coolant.

You paid a bit more than Toyota's suggested list price for both the belts and the coolant. Double belts have twice the pully contact area of a single belt and as a result are 1/2 as likely to slip.

I called arround all the dealers in ATL the prices for Toyota red ranged from 12 to 22 $/gal I went to the $12 dealer that is only about twice the price of regular coolant

Tucson -

Welcome to the forum!

Next time you are looking for parts, send a message to the gentleman who just posted above - CruiserDan - and you will be pleasantly surprised ;).

Even if your rig is an LX, many (most...) of the mechanical parts are identical to the LC twin.

Cheers, R -

Thanks for the replies. I have seen that CruiserDan supplies many parts for people on this board, Thank You CruiserDan. But I figured that with the price of shipping the coolant, assuming you can, it would be cheaper to buy local. CruiserDan, you can expect to hear from me in the future though.
Thanks
Aaron

TucsonLX,

Welcome aboard.

The brass plug to drain the block can be seen/accessed by removing the rear plastic skirt in the drivers side wheel well. Just look straight across on the side of the engine block. You'll need about two feet worth of socket extension to get to it. 14mm or 17mm IIRC.

The knowledge just keeps on flowing.
Thanks again

IIRC Cdan Does not do coolant, I could be wrong through

It's 14mm and you only need to move the skirt a little. Removal is not required.

so, Beo, basically then you go out, lift the skirt off your TLC, and take a peek?
hmmm....

I love the redundancy of the drive belts. About a month ago I noticed something sticking out from under the engine. It turned out to be one of the drive belts that had goten stuck on the skid plate/engine cover thingy. Truthfully I had no idea how long this belt had been off. :whoops:

We'll just say I have all new belts now. :D

Unsure if this applies, but one would think that by having twice the belt contact, much less drive belt tension could be used. That could allow less load on the water pump and alternator bearings, vastly increasing their reliability and life expectancy. Just a theory....

Possibly.. the specified drive belt tension on these vehicles is a fair amount less than what I've seen on other vehicles.

I stock it and sell it, I just can't ship it.

No. I go out, lift the skirt, and shove a 2' tool in there. :D

LOL :flipoff2:

that would be with several extensions, evidently?
