I'm not saying there's a high failure rate, but it's factual that the pinion gear is smaller and therefore more likely to break compared to a larger diameter pinion gear. That's not moot or reaching, it's fact.

A properly set up 5.29 R&P will not break before other components. This is not moot or reaching, it’s fact.

Therefore, staying at 4.88 for perceived strength is entirely, absolutely, and utterly pointless.

I’ve debated between 5.29’s and 4.88’s myself. Most on here poopoo’d 5.29, but I feel like these trucks are underpowered and steeper gears take strain off the trans and motor, but applying more to the axle shafts.

If the main objective is wheeling and some towing, over gearing it would help, but mileage will suffer in the freeway. Mileage should be near factory with 4.88’s since the math from stock tires to 315/70-17’s is almost the same.

For me, this thing is for wheeling, towing my jumping jack trailer(lightly loaded) and occasional cruising around town. It will be ready to go at any time, meaning the back will be loaded with a couple hundred pounds of camping stuff. I like to have some oomph off the line that stock gears and 315’ seriously lack, badly.

Sure, while wheeling I could go to low gear, but I have not played with it much, but that’s way more gear than 5.29’s and should be used for going slow. Well, that’s my 2 cents

Thanks for all the replies. This is exactly what I’m looking for. Anyone on the central coast and their experience on Cuesta grade or grapevine
Nitro Gears 5.29s with 315s Toyo MT's on factory rims. Have Full armor and storage drawers. I tow a 24ft. travel trailer. Up the grade with the new gears I can pull the trailer around 45mph as apposed to around 30 with stock. I eventually plan for 37s. But even if I don't it's more beneficial to me to keep the 5.29s!

What’s the percentage of grade there? I’ll be loading my trailer(1200) and 4-500 pounds of other stuff. I always wait to ice up my coolers until I’m up in the mountains, fill up my water jugs and fuel. No point in hauling heavy stuff farther than I need.

I climb from 1500-6500 sometimes 8k but it’s kinda gradual except a few Big hills. I don’t mind spinning it as long as it’s not loaded too heavy(well, past vehicles)

Picked up my rig yesterday after a 5.29 regear. Was planning on going
4.88 but was talked into the 29s as she is a weekend trail rig and decided the lowest crawl would serve her best.

1st impression is I picked up 100 horsepower. Up the altimont pass heading home I could accelerate without downshifting into 2nd. I had to drop into second just to stay at speed with stock gears.

Drove up woodside rd/hwy 84 to skyline this morning and never bogged down. Very happy camper. If your rig is a weekend toy,5.29s is my suggestion

And if I decide 37s down the road, I am set.

I’m gonna go with 5.29. I will post with my results and thoughts. Scheduled to go in on Wednesday. I also purchased a yellow box. Hope to see it within the week.

I have 5.29's and 35's. RPMs are about 400 higher than stock at highway speed. Probably worse mileage. I'm not worried. I didn't buy it for fuel economy
