So the job for today was just to prepare for getting the motor mocked up tomorrow.

But I got my errands done early, and I was feeling motivated, so I started the engine one more time (it started right up too), and then went ahead mocking the motor up.

I am using motor mounts from Georg.

To make sure the mounts are located correctly when I weld them in (I will grind the frame rails down better and things first) I drilled a couple holes, to tap them so the bolts could locate them super accurately.

...but then I broke the tap. So I called it quits for the night.

I also took stock of some parts that arrived.

I did other stuff, but not ready to share a pic of that yet (different than my other secret project).

He sure did! They fit just right!

I just lowered the engine about into place, attached the crossmember and used that to the locate the assembly, and then bolted the motor mounts to the engine to see where they ended up. Very painless, and they really did fit very, very well.

Much faster (and a better end product) than if I had fabricated them myself.

That motor looks great in there. I'm thinking lately of putting an HZ-T into my stalled FJ45 project. There is a guy up here importing containers from Japan full of them (so he says). The 3B drivetrain I made for the 45 is now destined for my brother's "71 FJ40 (watch for a thread soon. ish.)

No 70 series parts involved in the secret project. I haven't done anything more with it today, other than admire the beauty of it's design.

Yep! I know that a set of them was modified for a 40 series, and I believe that they were measured so perhaps there will be available a similar mount for the 40 series soon. (I hope so--I also have the 1HZ for my 45, whenever I get to work on it)

It sucks indeed. In fact, I went into town this morning, came back up to the shop and promptly broke another one.

At this point I was glad I bought 3 when I was in town. So I finished the holes up, and that was that.

Then I tacked the mounts into place...

EDIT--I modified the DS mount just a touch. This was originally a hole, and a slot below it. To make it easier to get the engine in and out I made it one big slot. Plenty strong still (I've done this on others without a problem) and MUCH easier to get the engine into place.

With the motor mounts tacked into place, Dad helped me put the engine back in (which is MUCH easier with help, BTW). Once the engine was back in, I put the inner fenders and fenders on to start looking at mocking up some of the things that need to go in there.

I'm pretty impressed with the 1HZ so far. I haven't driven mine, of course, but everything about it seems well designed. Yes, it has a timing belt, but the crankshaft is timed to the injection pump (and vac pump, and PS pump) via gears--and the timing belt just times the crankshaft to the IP. So it's a real simple system, and I was able to pull and replace my timing belt in less than an hour.

The 1HZ is going on 25 years of production right so Toyota must think it's a pretty good design. Will be nice to see it with a turbo (intercooled?) on your rig and will be interesting to compare it side by side with the 12H-T.

Here's where I'm thinking of putting the fuel filter group (from an HZJ-78 I believe).

I'm still hoping to hide a Webasto down below there, so I guess I should get busy acquiring one so that I can make sure it fits, eh?

I also took some paint and accosted the remnants of the HJ-61 half cut. This is a color (and general scheme) I am leaning towards. The only direction from my wife is that it not be "booger green" so I've been asking some friends if this counts as booger green. So far, they all agree that this isn't booger green. I'll get more pics tomorrow in more sun.

For the record, it's Toyota 6L4 Light Olive.

I am not planning on intercooling it. Mostly because I don't want to cut the hood to put in a scoop, and because I'm guessing it will be just fine as it is.

But I will be very, very curious to see how similar it is to the 12HT. Our trucks are built very, very similarly otherwise, so it will be as fair of a test as possible.

That was for the 12H-T. It's just sitting outside the shop, because we've been too lazy to haul it to the scrappers. But it was handy for testing the color scheme out, I think.

(PS--anybody want parts off the half cut body or frame? We will scrap it fairly soon I suspect)

This morning I started by mocking up the turbo and intake plumbing. I have decided to use the Turboglide kit, instead of the Disco Potato setup I also have for this truck. The turbo glide kit is complete, and will look like it belongs in there.

You can see that the turbo inlet is too tall. I trimmed it down to get it to fit.

All trimmed and fitted.... (this will also allow me to relocate the crankcase vent inlet to a better angle.

And just to see how beautiful it is, and to see how much room I have to work with over here, I quickly set the new washer bottle in place.

I spent an inordinate amount of time working on my special/secret project. Getting pumped!

I tinkered a good bit with the seat mounting. Mostly I need to mount the passenger seat so that I can get a good look at how to mount the suspension seat base in the drivers side to match.

We started with the steam cleaner...

Then we pulled the motor out, and separated the engine from the transmission so that we could get the engine on the engine stand.

One thing I learned was that the pilot bearing was absolutely destroyed during it's life in the mine.

And then we did a good bit more steam cleaning. Absolutely incredible how well steam cleans these things up. (compare this to the pics earlier in the day of mocking up the turbo)
