White trash "D" light fix

I noticed today driving home from work the my trusty "d" light was out. I'd heard from a fellow club member that you could smack the dash and in some cases the light would come back on.

So, sitting at a light, I pound on the dash a couple times - nothing. I'm looking around for something to smack the dash panel with and get an idea.

Drop the steering wheel down, hold the tilt lever out - wham!

"D" light is back on. Laughed my ass off.

I've done the white trash fix on my "D" light over two years ago. The LX knows to keep the light on than to get another spanking!

That's a good one. Steering-wheel-as-hammer. Bet that crack between the steering column and dash that opens up would be a great place to crack nuts, too!

The center tree above the steering wheel: "P, R, N, D, 2, L" The "D" for drive has never lit up on any 80 I've owned. I really thought that was the plan, until I heard others lit up.

I'm glad it doesn't light up, the 2 and L lights are too bright at night for me as it is, I can't imagine having the D lit up all the time...

That's what I mean - I really thought the "D" light was intentioanlly dark, considering you usually know when you are driving in "D", and everything else is something you need to be reminded about.

Intentionally dark...that's pretty funny.
It makes sense that it would typically be the first to burn out though...being on all the time. Mine burned out a couple years ago and I haven't missed it at all. In fact, I've gotten used to it being out and now, if I see something lit up in that area, it catches my attention.

mine lights but is darker than the others. is this due to the bulb having more run time on it or is it by design?
i smacked my dash to squash a bug once and the one light on the tach that was out, suddenly lit up.

My D light went out the other week and did not come back do you think I ought to be more firm you know show who is boss. Maybe I am too much of a softy and should show a firmer hand and then ahhh maybe the others will turn on me. Slapping is almost illegal in this country ah well I shall just have to ask it politely.

My "D" light is actually dimmer than the other lights (P-R-N-2-1) and it actually has two automatic brightness settings, depending on whether the parking/headlights are on or off.
