Great description. First winter for me in this 2001. Heard it this morning leaving the house and it lasted a couple miles, then nothing the rest of the day. Definitely seemed correlated with cold weather and has had me wondering this week. Timely post to see. Thanks.

Output bearing worn...If your rear shaft isn't taking grease past the seal don't hydrolock it, you'll be sorry now or later...

Same thing on my '98 when it's cold, e.g., mid 30s. Goes away after a 1/4 mi or so.

Same thing on my 99 when temps below freezing...goes away within a mile.

I just yell at the source of the whining and it eventually stops after less than a mile.

Now, the correlation to my passengers stopping the whining and the noise ceasing from the rear of the drivetrain may or may not be correlated.
