G'day guys, i've got a 71 FJ40 which i've just got on the road. Its got a 253 V8 in it and the original 3speed gearbox in it (which was rebuilt a year ago before i decided to pull the motor apart). Problem is that the there is a loud whining coming from around the gearbox/clutch/tcase. Its only there when your in gear and moving, its goes when you push the clutch in or are in neutral. I've put new oil in everything (gearbox, tcase. both diffs) but it is still there. i though the clutch might have not been disengaging completely so i loosened it alittle and that didnt help. I should add that when it was rebuilt they but all new bearings in including the throu out. Any ideas would be great :)

Probably your t-case. Rebuilt mine and it still makes a bit of a high pitched whine. My gears looked like new too. You can try running a quart of lucas in one at a time. When the noise changes then you found your problem.

Gear Whine

The noise is most likely coming from the transfer case especially if it's still there in high gear.
The two gears on the output shaft have bushing in then that run on the shaft when they are not in what ever range you are in ie the lower range gear turns on the shaft when you are in high range and the opposite in low range.
The bushing gets worn in the high gear and the gear cocks slightly on the shaft so as the torque goes on the gear teeth for drive to coast mode you get gear noise because the teeth are not evenly loaded The fix is new bushing in the high output gear in the transfer case. This will mot fix the noise completely as the gears take on a wear pattern from the bushing allowing the gear to cock over a little. When you put a new bushing in it aligns everything back up but you have worn teeth. It generally gets better as you drive untill the bushing wears again, probably not in your lifetime.
Get used to the noise it's part of driving a single piece transfer case cruiser.

While your at in the transfer case you could replace all the other bearings. Make sure the preload is within specs on the TC output shaft bearings.
You can still get the bushings for the dealer. or SOR has then in stock for about $28.00
The funny thing the bushing doesn't get worn out from turning it gets worn from the torque on the gear from the engine and drive train, the forward and back load tends to wobble the gear on the shaft. The low gear which turns all the time you are in high range will show very little wear unless you drive in low a lot.
My 1980 FJ40 has been in low range for the last 15 plus years with odd time in high range to drive to the mail box maybe.

Hope this helps.

Thanks jb

your cruiser is a whiner
