Gentlemen:
I am currently having this engine noise problem with my subject SUV and was wondering if anyone can help? The mechanics of our local Toyota repair shop have given up in solving the problem - it seems they are not ready to open-up the engine. after a week of trying to solve / locate the problem.
Actually, before this noise really came about, a leak from the vehicles power steering pump was noticed. The said pump was then removed and some o-rings / other parts were replaced. While I did think the leaking problem had been solve, a certain noise from the engine came about after a week of using the vehicle. Anyway, it was determine that the power steering pump was not re-installed properly and had caused the body of power steering pump to crack. In the absence of a new pump, the cracked pump was temporarily welded together and re-installed. While we saw that the repaired / welded power steering pump was working well, the whining noise has not dissappeard. While the mechanics think I should just live with the new engine noise, I honestly believe some internal parts may have been affected when the power steering pump was not installed properly.
For your added info, the noise is not coming from the repaired power steering (ps) pump as we did try starting the engine after removing the repaired ps pump. The whining sound was still there.
Thank you very much and hope to get some help from your group regarding my concern.
