which one is the too fat-to-fit wheel hub "54mm" socket?

I used a borrowed Craftsman 2 1/8". Fit with a bit of room to spare, maybe 1mm gap or so from memory.

but if anybody takes the flange off, it would be good to measure the opening diameter (and the length too) so we know once and for all the max diameter the socket should be. (sorry, didn't think to do it when I had it open...)

When I had mine off, I measured it for Raven so he may remember the exact number, but IIRC it's somewhere between 2.84" (Craftsmen 2 1/8") and 2.89" (Proto 2 1/8"). As mentioned above, the Proto didin't fit, but the Craftsmen does. I'm thinking the hub is either 2.86" or 2.87".

I've also been pleasantly surprised with some of the HF tools I've purchased.. especially all of the "Pittsburgh" open end wrenches. They're not snap-on by any means, but when you can get the whole set for $9.99 what do you expect.... the pipe wrenches, otoh, are pretty terrible.. but again I think all 4 were $10 so, and I eventually got the big nut loose that I need to at the time.

And I got my hub socket from Christo.. 54mm, and it too requires the ½"-¾" adaptor.

For this, I'd really stick with the 1/2" drive. As part of your tool bag, you should likely have a 1/2" drive in there anyway, but with a required adapter, it's just one more thing to loose and I'd hate to be stuck somewhere temporarily due to missing a dang adapter. Then again, you could always get out of the jam the same way as a lazy mechanic/butcher.

It's my only 3/4" socket, so they are always together ;p

I'm just a garage mechanic, but I use and loan my 3/4" drive ratchet wrench as much as any tool I own. Everyone who has borrowed it was amazed, that thing makes short work of tough fasteners. No noise or hoses, no beat-up heads, just solid leverage. I keep the 3/4"-1/2" adapter on it at all times. I've pulled out my impact wrench maybe twice in the past five years. Haven't had to use the 1" breaker bar yet, but it looks cool above the bench.

I posted a pic of driving the outer race with the hub socket https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=17819. You can see there's not much clearance there, perfect for that race. It's a cheap Chinese socket, I'll measure it tomorrow.

Tisk... Tisk... Eric. Doesn't "roughly" buy you a couple of hundreths around here?? . No.. but you're right, it can't be that small. I was suprised how much difference a couple hundreth's of an inch makes. Well.. I guess it's the difference between getting the hub off and sitting there scratching your head... "WTF".

The bearing race is 2.891" OD, an interference fit, so no wonder your Proto wouldn't fit!

darn it, stopped a Snap-on truck forcibly on the road, and got the 54mm socket ($17 plust tax). (It's no Craftsman, that's for sure, just a tube and a welded piece).

And then when I got home I realized it is a 3/4". Forgot to check on the spot. Do they have a 1/2" too? Can't find it in their catalog...

Just get an adapter. Good to have anyway. You'll spend more in gas trying to find the guy.

Yep, the Craftsmand is 3/4" also. I found an adapter at the pawn shop for $5. You don't put that much torque it to worry about loosing anything with the adapter.

I have a Draper 55mm one which fits no problem on my 4runner - same clearance problem and nut size as the LC. It's a 3/4 drive one and the adapter and socket came to £25 (about $40).

Go to HF or Northern Tool. You can get a package of three (1/4" to 3/8", 3/8" to 1/2", & 1/2" to 3/4") for $5.

Yes, however they are getting rarer as most of the cars in the UK use metric. Can still get Whitworth and other imperial types however often need to go to a specialist shop for anything out of the ordinary.

Mind you we aren't as well served for tool suppliers over here as you guys stateside. The web tends to be the best place to get this sort of stuff as we don't have nice big tool shops like Sears.
