Which de-greaser do you use before starting a project under the hood/chassis?

Which De-greaser do you reach for to prep your engine / chassis for a job?

Look for the aircraft version, won't mess with the aluminum.
Does the regular stuff mess with aluminum? I guess I haven't noticed that it does. I usually scrub and rinse anything I am spraying it on, but I don't think I am seeing any issues with it contacting the aluminum on either of my trucks.

I will get that though if it is better and works as well. I need another gallon anyway...

Reportedly, it will eat away at untreated or raw aluminum if you don't rinse it, which could be an issue if you spray and don't get it out of nooks and crannies. I believe the plain Purple Power has the same issue; I think there's an industrial version that's safe, but don't quote me on that.

I used to use simple green to clean my engine bay on some of my old cars. Amazing results. Just soak down with simple green and then hose off.

I don't believe I've ever cleaned up under the hood of the 80 :hillbilly:

:edit: found some pics of the old s***brick. No scrubbing.

I used the Gunk cleaner in the past with good results. Recently I tried the simple green based on recommendations on this forum. Not sure I was that impressed. It smelled better so that was something..

Dawn mixed with Hot water in a bucket and detailing brushes. Wrap rags on brush end for clean-up. Works great - also better for wastewater if ya care.

Steam promotes rust

X2 on lying someone $50 to have it steam cleaned.

Dollar store oven cleaner. Just don't let it sit too long before rinsing to keep aluminum from getting pitted up. Spray, wait 3 minutes, rinse, repeat. YMMV.
Added images, before and after... Results were better than I could have hoped for.

When I had my engine out and the truck was in my home shop, I couldn't do anything with running water or stinky solvents.

I used Zep Fast 505 and was amazed with the results. Spray it on, let it sit a minute or so, and wipe it off with a paper towel. Scrub when necessary. The stuff takes grease off very well and doesn't stink very bad. It leaves paint shiny when you wipe it clean. Wear rubber gloves.

Here's an "in process shot"

If it's something you don't want to clean, and may never see again, just cover it with a single layer of plastic grocery bag or garbage bag. It will stick to a greasy surface very well and peel off when you're done. It's like putting the tyvek suit on the truck instead of you.

Leading edge of the gas tank. 1/8" thick grease and power steering fluid probably:
