Hey everyone!

Yesterday my alternator decided to die on me and I have been looking at several options. Just so you know what I have that consumes power out of a dual battery system.

Winch 8275 with 9.5xp motor
Lights all around LED
2 amps
Vhf radio
External fuel pump
Alarm
2 compressors
Power inverter
Dual zone fridge

Options are...

Option 1: keep it OEM with the 80 series alternator.

Option 2: Put a Tundra alternator( can't find who sells the bracket and everything i need)

Option 3: Mean green... not sure about this, a lot of complaints online https://www.mean-green.com/1993-1997-LANDCRUISER-45L-MG13497.html

Option 4: M2kinc not to much info online but it looks like a very interesting option OEM fit.

Might just be worn brushes, a new brush pack is under $20.

For the larger alternator, Photoman (user name) makes/sells the brackets, try sending him a pm.

Yes I saw Photoman brackets but in all the post it looks like he doesn't make them anymore.

Stick with the factory. I’d try out changing the brushes. Only costs a few bucks. I

I bought the Sequoia/Tundra alternator. You can find information about the bracket here Upgrading stock alternator to 130/150 amp The alternator was the first mod I did and it was a while back. I believe I bought my bracket from Photoman. I would reach out to him to see if he has any if you are interested. I've been happy with mine. I haven't had any issues but I really don't have anything to compare it to since I changed it right away due to recommendations by friends. Another benifit in my opinion is I think it is easier to find a alternator from the 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 08-09 Toyota Sequoia, Tundra if I was every in a tough spot than to find an 80 series alternator. Just my two cents. Good luck!

I recently purchased a bracket from photoman - he's still selling and shipping them - give him a PM.

Good dude.

Depending on what you mean by "my alternator died", I would do new brushes in the alternator and a hand throttle for when winching and maybe when airing up, but beyond that, you probably don't have the need for nearly double the OEM alternators output.

Yes I always turn on the truck to air up and to run the inverter. When using the winch always keeping it over 2200 2500 rpm and not running the winch non stop ( stoping every 5 - 8 seconds ).
I am just looking for what is better to run with my 2 batteries and set up.

I would either pony up the $$ and do the Photoman 150A upgrade or take your existing alternator into a local automotive electric shop and have them rebuild it. I think they are both good solutions. I had the money at the time and did the 150A upgrade. The Photoman bracket is an excellent product and the Sequoia alternator works well. And any decent electric shop can rebuild your existing one good as new (and better than a off-the-shelf rebuilt unit).

thank you sir, i already reach out to @Photoman just waiting for him to answer with price and availability depending on that I will make my decision on what to do.

If you were not having problems with the old alternator up until it died then why not just get a reman from Toyota? I got caught up in the high powered alternator obsession a few years ago but before I went that route I did a lot of reading and spoke with a couple of alternator builders. The conclusion was that the conservatively rated oem alternator was enough and that a bigger tank (dual batteries) is a better upgrade.

It would be a very rare occasion to be running every electron consuming device that’s on your truck at the same time. Before spending money and a lot of time making a bigger alternator fit, figure out what your biggest likely electrical load will be and go from there.

Don’t waist your money on a “High power” alternator thats in the stock size housing either.

thanks for the info, i already have a dual battery system and i was thinking that the alternator being more powerful will prevent the alternator to work harder to maintain both batteries.

Batteries will accept a charge only so quickly and sticking with what I know works is preferred for a vehicle I depend on many miles from services and in areas where a tow truck won’t go to.

It’s true that a bigger alternator that was original Toyota equipment would probably meet reliability requirements it will still cost a good many dollars and your time. But, if you decide to go with more Amps, a Sequoia or Tundra alternator would be my choice.

What I can say that is really nice about the Photoman solution is the smaller pulley. I bought a junk yard Sequoia unit, and when it didn't work quite right I took it to my friend who runs an alternator shop for a rebuild. When I picked up the unit, he commented on not only how well the alternator puts out for its size, but also how well it puts out at low RPMs.

Again, IMHO, both the stock alternator and the Photoman setup are both excellent solutions.

Can I ask ... what was the sign that your alternator died? How do you know it is pouched?
The light came on and the i disconnected the battery and the engine turned off. Also when on it was reading in between 12.8 and 13.2
