anybody know where i can find weld-in inserts for fj80 TRE's or anybody know what the thread pitch is and size of the TRE...

thanks

never seen em...

I started to do the FJ80 rod end thing on my 40, due to availability of the proper reamer and inserts, I'm now running the standard 3/4 (1 ton) chevy stuff.

yea that would be cool, but i'm planning on buying the all pro offroad ones... and there reamed for fj80 TRE's and there on sale from www.rockjunkie4x4.com for 145.00 with free shipping

i'm guessing your running 4x4 labs....

Try giving Bud at Budbuilt.com a call. When I swapped the 80 axle under my 4runner I was going to get him to make me a custom length draglink. Ended up that the factory 80 draglink fit. I still went ahead and got his rods. He's a great guy with great products.

I am running stock steering arms with FJ40 TRE's. My draglink is the chevy stuff.

You could easily ream out the allpro arms for the chevy one-ton. The SnapOn reamer that everyone says sucks worked great for me.

I think you'll have better luck finding a tap.

Good luck. I couldn't find one here in DFW.

BTW, it's 23mm, I believe 1.75 pitch.

cool thanks for the info, maybe i'll do that

1. how much did you pay for 1 tons TREs and where should i get them

2. whats the thread/pitch on those things?

Marlin does not advertise them but include the inserts with there high steer kits

1) Pepboys, autozone wtc..

My ones from AZ were genuine spicer

2) 7/8 x 18 not a standard thread. But weld in inserts are widely available.

why would a chevy TRE be 23mm?
I was told the newer GMC TRE's are metric. No first hand knowledge.

The place you will run into trouble with taps is finding the left hand thread tap. They are made out of unobtainium  .

Allpro will make drag links/tie rods for around $60 ea w/o the 80 TRE's.

You might also call Spidertrax or Blue Torch Fab which, oddly, I found out about from one of your post. They may have the 23mm inserts now.

Why not just buy the whole Hysteer kit from Allpro?

The "standard" GM tre's (both 3/4 and 1 ton) are 7/8 x 18. And the LH tap is not overly difficult to find. But you typically have to order it.

They are very strong.

you might be right that later 1 ton stuff is metric but honestly, you would be shooting yourself in the foot going that route. The older stuff (mid to late 80's at least) is readily available and is what most of the aftermarket is designed after.

The only problem with the 1 ton stuff is the heads are large enough that typically the hole spacing on the PS steering arm does not permit their use..

I tried to have the all pro arms reamed to fit 1 tom tre's but they are to small or should I say the tre's are to big . not enough meat leftover around the taper.Kind of defeats the purpose of running the bigger joints. I'd try to get a new tie rod and drag link made with the stock 80 series threads.

Oops. That was meant to be info for the FJ80s.

McMasterCarr will have your left handed tap, they are spendy though.

Cost me $50 for two tie rod ends. Autozone seems to normally have them in stock, not a single Napa in atlanta did.

There are a TON of different part #'s that work. Look here- http://www.partsmikeparts.com/tre_comparison.htm

Most of the one ton ends are 7/8-18, a few are 1-18 make sure you have the 7/8's before you leave the store.

Also- the RH thread TRE with the hole comes with a jam nut, the short RH thread ones do not. You can get the jam nut from GM.

It is a 1.5" per foot taper. The snapon one is inexpensive and works, Goodson is better.

www.spidertrax.com sells bungs for the 7/8-18 and they also have RH and LH so i think im good to go... i'll just get some 1.25 ID DOM tubing and ream out my high steer... (we'll see if there is enough meat for them to handle cheby 1 ton)

Cruisin GA thanks for that link it was very helpful.

I have saginaw power steering and i bought a conversion rod from BTB i think that uses a GM tre on one end and a metric TRE on the other. I will just find a GM tre that fits with my saginaw steering arm and find a bung that corresponds with that of the TRE then just use a chevy 1-ton TRE on the High steer arms

Whats wrong with the stock FJ40 Tie rod ends?

I am running a 1.5" diameter BudBuilt tie rod on my FJ40 with the stock FJ40 TRE's.

I've picked the front end of the truck completely off the ground with a forklift, the tie rod didn't deflect, and the tie rod ends took it (still running them 2 years later, and I have absolutly no steering slop).
