I have an appointment on Friday to
  1. Get the windshield replaced (multiple chips and 9” crack at top left)
  2. Get the existing window tint removed and re-tinted with much lighter colored ceramic tint (also doing the new windshield in clear). Also getting the front glass done with clear film with the ceramic properties of letting less heat in, etc etc

I’m a bit apprehensive of the windshield chrome trim… they said since the trim is NLA, they will do their best to preserve the existing one so it can be re-used, but worst case, the new windshield will have to go in without the chrome trim. I specifically chose a glass installer that has been doing this for 20+ years, so here’s to hoping…

Pic of the crack in the corner… and my drug-dealer stripe up top. That will be GONE.

Good thing we caught that positive battery cable dangerous SHORT situation with the metal brace & bare + wire being barely 1/8" inch from each other. ZZZaaaapppp!!!
Agreeeeeeed.

Few updates to report…
  • New windshield installed, and they were able to retain the chrome, which is great…
  • All other windows tinted with Lumar CTX brand tint… ceramic with very light coloring… I don’t like the dark colored tint and this looks great
  • I also got the windshield done with a clear ceramic film that blocks UV etc, but the installer (super nice guy) wasn’t pleased with the outcome, he said there were a couple of lines that bothered him, in the film, so he removed it and we’ll go back and get that done later.
I’ll get more pictures of the rest of the windows later…

Also since I’m still having the “stumbling issues”, after discussing over the phone for 5 minutes with @cruisermatt, and since the fuel system is basically completely gone through, it’s time to pay a little more attention to the ignition system, and that starts with basic tune-up stuff. The engine was rebuilt 4000 miles ago, but not over my watch, and the wires/cap didn’t appear to be new… so never hurts for some OEM refresh.

During the Spark Plugs, Spark Plug Wires, Cap, Rotor replacement, we noticed that the #4 plug was loose… didn’t take any effort to freely spin. Pics of the spent plugs look generally OK. Also there was a small vacuum line from the air box to the valve connected to the charcoal canister that wasn’t connected/plugged. So we removed that, capped the air box, and put a small screw into the valve for now because the plastic nipple on the valve was broken.

Those 2 x vacuum leaks (spark plug and open hose) may have contributed to some of the stumble…

Butttt… after wrapping it up and firing her off and going for a short drive… the stumble came right back. So… we’ll just keep working on finding the smoking gun. I will investigate the grounds next.

In the meantime, needing a bit of instant gratification, I replaced the rear liftgate struts. I’m happy with it… very happy. It’s not OEM but boy does it work, and sometimes that’s what you need… something to fix the issue you’re going after :)

I actually need these right now. Thanks for the part numbers!

I finally got in touch with my shipper and he said he’d be picking up the FJ62 and taking it to @cruisermatt sometime between now and 7/27… but basically just when he had a full shipment.

Part of what Matt mentioned to me was that if I was going to be changing out my carpet as a part of my H55 conversion (since there’s gonna be a hole where the A440 lived), that I could send the new front section of carpet with the rig and they’d cut the hole and get everything in the right place…

Well, I recently (earlier this year) did a @dnp carpet for my FJ80 and the front section was such a pain in the ass (at least compared to the rear section), so I made sure to make this part of my planned activities prior to sending it to Florida for surgery.

I also want to get the seats (all except the driver of course) out so that I have something to do while it’s in Florida - clean the seats/trim up nice… also need to take off the mud flaps to do some work on them while it’s gone…

I had about 90 minutes to mess with it after I finished work for the day.

Tomorrow I’m gonna do some more cleaning of the floorboards and get some Noico butyl mat down and then 1 x layer of Ensolite close cell foam. And once I get the mudflaps off, I’ll keep working my way back until the shipper gives me a call…. I don’t need to drive the FJ62 much until it gets shipped as we’re taking delivery of a Subaru Outback Wilderness tomorrow, and I’ll be able to daily the FJ80 while the FJ62 is apart…

so we'll have to find a driver's seat to put in for test driving

I’ll put that seat back in before she heads your way. I’m gonna figure out the cleaning part with the other seats… and give the same treatment to the driver seat once she’s back…

And in a similar spot this morning to where I was in my FJ80… got the carpet and old jute padding up, fully intended to put down this Noico butyl sound deadening that I bought waaaay too much of for the FJ80… and after inspecting the FJ62 floor, I don’t wanna do it.

The factory deadening on the floor is in great shape with Zero signs of any rust. I’m definitely NOT going through the effort of removing it, and frankly I think I’m gonna skip putting any of the Noico on the floors.

Look… the FJ62 isn’t a 1980s Mercedes… it’s not really intended to be that kinda quiet. But with new carpet and some sound deadening in the door when I get into them… it’ll be fresh and the interior will be extremely serviced. And I’m GOOD with that.

@jesus888 one of the VSVs you removed on the driver side fender for the desmog (post #8) helps control the FPR (I ‘think’…haven’t looked at mine in awhile)… it’s advised to keep that one functioning. Believe maybe it’s the yellow plug…I can confirm later, or someone else here can chime in.
Could be something that could help smooth things out. (?)

One more since we’re moving kinda into putting some stuff back possibly sooner than later.

Got the @dnp carpet outta the box to relax… and pulled the plastic pieces off of the old carpet. The new carpet looks great.

Glad to see it arrived, and you're going to LOVE the way it looks! While waiting to begin the install, be sure to read completely thru the installation guide I sent with your order, because unfortunately, the front piece is a little more technical than your 80 front piece (as you know, the 80 has a console that surrounds the shifters and doesn't require individual, precise holes for them; however, the 62 requires those individual holes.) Just follow the suggestions in the guide, and it'll really help with the install. It's really no big deal, as long as you proceed slowly and deliberately.

Lastly, I know there are different schools of thought on this, but unless you encounter an existing rust issue, there's no reason you can't / shouldn't apply an asphaltic or other sound deadener material over the OEM deadener. These are old, crude-by-today's-standards vehicles that can benefit from more contemporary sound deadening technology. I found that using an 80mil asphaltic material over my whole floor really helped, if nothing more than with just metal resonance dampening. It's hard to measure how much it reduced exterior noise and heat, but overall, it's quieter, so it was definitely a worthwhile effort. Also, like you said above, the main areas in which I found improvement were in the doors and quarters. The difference it made in those areas was incredible!

I appreciate that and as soon as I get this carpet in, I will def take a look at the box of desmog equipment that I have. Do you have any more info you can point me to Re: the VSV? And maybe what some symptoms are of it missing?

This morning started by running to Walmart and getting a drill brush and some upholstery cleaner for the seats.

Since I’m not putting any Noico mat down, once I get the seats cleaned and dried, I can get em back in the FJ62 and get at least the rear and middle pieces of carpet in.

Insert #snowball here…

Pic 1: supplies
Pic 2: before
Pic 3: after

Not much difference but you’ll have to trust me that a lot of stuff came out. Plus the after is still a little damp here, I did hit with the shop vac to pull any excess moisture out.

My goal is to get it cleanish… I didn’t want to become a hog ring upholstery expert yet, and honestly maybe never. I have some @torfab brackets for BMW seats in the front (May or may not utilize them…. Not sure yet) and I may just get all of the seats recovered at some point. Point is, I’m not trying to make these seats look new at this point, but I did give it the college effort, for now.

So after things dried for a bit, I put the rear seat-back back into the truck so I could get the rear piece of carpet in… took 30 min and very happy with the fitment along with @dnp ’s instruction sheet.

I opted to keep my vinyl rear wheel wells because they’re in pretty good shape and I like the look.
