is there anyway to get a refund on the tax portion already paid? I thought they would send the prorated amount automatically, but now that I think about it I never received anything after selling my Outback earlier this year. Just registered my 80 like 2 weeks ago and it is being sold, too.

Those fees ARE returned to you in the form of all the wonderful government services they pay for.

Actually, you send in a bill of sale and I think you can get money back. Or maybe it's just so they don't continue to charge you. I can't remember.

i have sent a bill of sale in and gotten a refund twice, in a row. just ask the people at your local license plate store for the address.

if you don't ask for a refund they wont give it to you.

South Carolina does it automatically. The buyer has to go to the tax office before the DMV.

Yep, got $17.65 back from SC after turning my plates in on the '88 62 sold back in April but I did have to walk over the receipt of tag turn in the DMW issued to the tax office, otherwise they would have gladly kept the $.
