Soon to be the primary car for newly licensed prodigal son. The stock wheels are rusty and beat up, and I've got to put new tires on it since the old ones have a 2007 date code, cracks etc.

We live about a half mile from the Pacific ocean, so sea air, moisture / fog take their toll.

I don't want to spend a lot on the wheels, and some basic steel rims would be fine with me. Any suggestions on manufacturer? I plan on keeping the stock 16" size unless someone can convince me otherwise. Looking at BFG-AT for the tires. Any options to rehab the existing wheels that don't involve a rattle-can of paint?

Thanks!

Level 8 at discount tire is only $100-120ish per corner.

If you plan to keep the 16” stock size, I think you will be pretty limited. You can have the stock wheels powder coated or you can go cheap and rattle can them. Lots of folks on here go the rattle can approach since it’s easy to touch up and looks pretty good.

What kind of paint? Those do look good - painted the center caps too?

If your rims are rusty, I think the time and effort to deal with the rust would be a deal breaker for me. Also, since you are near the coast, why go with steel wheels again? I would go with DirtDog suggestion and go with some stock aluminum alloys. Cheap and you don't have to worry about rust.

Hard to argue with that logic. So any year Tundra stock alloys will fit?

Tundra take-offs is the way to go. Can routinely find the 5-star pattern steel wheels for under $100 for 4 on CraigsList all the time here in Austin.

Dovyou have stock 16” wheels? They should be aluminum. They won’t rust. They will corrode and etch from brake dust. An hour with some 100 grit paper, followed up with primer and paint will get you a decent look. Is it perfect? No but it looks good from 10’ away.

Yes, my center caps were also done. I removed the Toyota sombrero, painted them then put the sombrero back on.

I used Duplicolor Graphite wheel paint.

I have 18's on my 04 and am looking to go back to 16's like I have on the 99 LX.
More room to air down and just seems to be more tire options for a 16.
Love my BFG's

Thanks, all, for the input. Checking CL and getting wire brush chucked up just in case. Will see which option makes the most sense.

Lots more stupid questions coming, I've neglected this beast for too many years.

Looks great! did you bother painting the back side of the wheel? I’m contemplating painting them with the tires on - or is the only/best way to go by removing each tire?
