I just got new wheel cylinders in I ordered and wanted to double check that they sent me the right parts. These are for my front brakes on a '73 FJ40. The right wheel cylinders are both the same. They are different from the left wheel cylinders and the left wheel cylinders are both the same. Just to clarify my question, are there just 2 different cylinder types (right and left) or should there be 4 different cylinder types? I am asking because I believe the rear ones take four different master cylinders, correct? Looking for the expert opinions here. :) Thanks!

maybe this will help

Well... Technically there are 4 different types of brake cylinder: Front and rear and left and right. The fronts cylinders are SINGLE piston and the rears are double piston. That makes four different types. You CAN swap them around but you won't like the results. The FSM is pretty clear as to where each cylinder goes. I also did a detailed write-up on how to install them correctly on my web site.

There are actually four different types for the rear axle. Left side have right hand threads, right side have left hand threads. Rear axle 'front' cylinders have one bleeder port, one tubing port. Rear axle 'rear' cylinders have two tubing ports, one feeding in from the master cylinder, one feeding out to the 'front' cylinder.

Also note that the ends of the cylinder are supposed to have one wide slot and one narrow slot, to index with the shoes. Many aftermarket cylinders only have two narrow slots, and they will advise you to grind down the wide end of the brake shoe to fit. This defeats the purpose of ensuring the shoes are correctly oriented, so get the correct cylinders or take precautions to ensure the shoes are installed with the correct orientation

Great Info. Your site is loaded with good instructions, info, etc. Much appreciated.

More good info/advice. The ones I received have one slot that is 7mm and one that is 8mm wide. So I assume that is the narrow and wide you described.
