I am trying to do my wheel bearings and it appears the FSM says the lock washer between the adjusting nut and the lock nut is not to be reused.

Anyone have any experience with this? I know it is cheap, but I can't find the part in stock and I'd like to do the job this weekend before baby #2 arrives next week.

Thanks

I buy a bearing kit from Cruiser outfitters that includes all the parts you need (that means the lock washer). But I agree, as long as it's in noticeable shape it can probably be reused. I just like new parts for the reassurance.

Reusable, only if there is no other option. If possible bend a tab that hasn't been previously bent. You run the risk of the previously bent tab breaking and that bit gets into the race and Chernobyl's the bearing-race-spindle, or worse it breaks and the nut loosens; you damage your new bearings ($), the spindle($$$), or the wheel falls off (^_______). Toyota dealer should at least have these lock washers in stock.

But maybe reconsider. If you're taking the time and expense to dig into this project, why not do it thoroughly? Doing this job correctly will yield a very long service interval and a safe vehicle. Once you get in there you'll probably find you'll need need new claw washers, and probably snap rings(cone washers too). IMO not worth the risk to potentially damage $$ peripheral components, or create a safety issues. Wait until you have all the parts & do it right.

Either way- good luck-

Cruiser Outfitters:

Part# FAWB9807T - $80
Timken Bearings (OEM Toyota Supplier)
(Fits 98'-07' UZJ100 & LX470, also includes thrust washer)

Part# FAWB9807TKIT - $14.50
Snap Ring Kit (6 various thickness) for FAWB9807T
(Fits 98'-07' UZJ100 & LX470) - 1 Req'd per vehicle.

Some good discussion here:
Wheel Bearings - When to replace / repack

If you can find two previously unbent tabs in proper usable position, you can reuse. Otherwise you'll need to replace with new.

Claw washer can be flipped to put best side inboard.
Make sure to set breakaway preload to FSM spec of 9.5 to 15 lb. with spring scale (fish scale), no matter how much torque is needed on adjusting nut.

Wheel hub flange teeth & outboard face should be in excellent condition, they are often worn down & damaged. Hub flange cone washer nuts are not reusable either, according to FSM. I reuse with a dab of blue Lock-tight, provide they inspect as serviceable. Cone washer must also be in good serviceable condition. Snap ring must be proper size to get lees than .20mm gap (can't be to tight) and in excellent condition (square, tight fit and unmarred).

Easy enough to replace any of these part after job completed without pulling wheel hub & brake caliper, 20 min job.

Just ordered new bearings, races, seal, crush washer, cone washers, and hub seal. $115 from a Toyota parts site.

I'll be working on it this week. Should be able to knock it out one evening.

Small price to pay to know you did it right. You won't regret it and will have years of good results.

Let us know how it goes. $115 for one side right?

For future reference, wheel bearing kit from cruiser outifitters (All OEM hardware & timkin bearings) is $80 and includes everything to do bearing overhaul besides cone washers (many reuse theirs). Plus it's good to support the Cruiser community!

The kit also includes a new lock washer and thrust bearing, did you order those too?

I ordered new lock washer. What is the thrust bearing?
My schematic shows an inner and outer bearing.

I did look at the cruiser outfitter website, but the website needs some work in my opinion. I had trouble finding what I needed. Needs to be laid out better, again just my opinion.

Edit: Yes I'm only doing one side.

Thrust washer, my bad.

And that's because his website isn't designed for online ordering or ease of use. Kurt and the guys at Cruiser Outfitters care about customer service, so they would prefer you call to order so they can make sure you get all the parts you need and to your satisfaction. imagine that, a company that would prefer to talk to you and actually care about your order.

Hmm, I don't know if I ordered a new thrust washer. I ordered all parts in the schematic that were marked non-reusable. I'll upload my order form and let me know if I missed anything.

If you missed it this time you'll probably be fine, they're usually in good enough shape to reuse.

This is what I ordered.

Yes, sorry, I get confused as well. It can be reused if in good shape. Some with worn bearings see scoring on the claw washer, that is when I would replace.
