This past weekend I took my LC 8 hours each way on vacation, and next week I'll be taking it 12 hours each way on another. With the age and high mileage I can't help but worry a little, also considering my front diff had a rapid unscheduled disassembly on the highway 9 hours from home last year.

Normally I check fluids and tire pressure, and monitor trans temps when towing our camper (with the Torque app). Oil change and driveshafts/u-joints lubed very recently. What are some reasonable checkpoints to add to the list? What do you check before long trips?

Gas, flip flops, snacks.

And ya, heater Ts. Going anywhere fun?
Heater Ts replaced a couple years ago, so far so good.

Heading to the Keys for 10 days of camping and catching lobsters with a bunch of friends. Boats, scuba, RVs, should be a good time.

Last week was a spur-of-the-moment trip to Fall Creek Falls State Park in Tennessee, it was a nice break from the oppressive heat and humidity.

Great question especially when traveling with family in tow.

I normally perform the following when driving over 500 miles:

Service
  • Oil and oil/air filters
  • Grease driveshaft
  • Check fluids: tranny, power steering, brakes, coolant, and AHC
  • Rotate tires and set air pressure
And the following stays in the tailgate storage at all times except for air compressor due to size.

Parts
  • @medtro Immobilizer Fix kit
  • @LandCruiserPhil Jack adapter
  • @TheForger CV Axle Puller
  • NOCO battery jumper
  • Jumper cables
  • VIAIR 88P air compressor
  • Tire patch kit
  • Denso fuel pump
  • Serpentine belt
  • Key ignition cylinder
  • 2 ignition plugs with 2 spark plugs
  • Tow strap with shackles
  • Duct tape and zip ties
  • 3/8 10mm-24mm shallow socket set with 3/8 ratchet and 6" extension

Check all fluids
Check for any leaks (coolant/oil)
Check CV's
Check tire air pressure
Make sure all items in my recovery/spares box are in place (extra parts/tools etc)

Thats pretty much it really. Our 100 has almost 230K miles and has been to Colorado and Utah the last 3 years in a row with no issues. I try to keep it in tip top shape though.

This sounds awesome, enjoy and eat well for me lol

Just did 8 hrs to and from the beach in our ‘04 LC w/253k — checked fluids and changed oil — great roadtrip vehicle.

Gas and snacks…. But I’ve also spent ~$5k the last few years on maintenance

Check re-torque front brake caliper bolts if needed.
Check coolant fluid and top off if needed.
Check tire pressures all around including spare tire.

Good to have a portable battery/jumpbox or some jumper cables in the truck just in case.
Tow straps/ratchet straps
Basic first aid kit
Cooler

I pop the hood and spend 1 minute checking fluids and looking for leaks. Maybe a tire pressure check if I haven't checked in a while.

But, more importantly, I like to do a full exterior and interior detailing before a long road trip. Gotta be looking good on the outside, and clean on the inside.
