Here's an update. My brother (he's a jeep guy.. uggh) and I went by and took a harder look and longer test drive. It starts right up with no major engine problems... the only thing is a wobble in the power steering pully. There's a repair order in the truck for a rear main seal replacement and clutch replacement... looks to have been done in May of this year ($1000 in repairs). She runs awesome, but the front end knuckles might pose a problem... the steering seems to catch. It cycles between being easy to steer and hard to steer... I'm not sure if it's a power steering or knuckle problem. She didn't want to get out of 4hi but we eventually got her back into 2 ... I think she was wanting to do some wheeling. As far as the diff gearing, it ran about 2000 rpm @ 55mph in 5th with enough power to pull it up a few decent hills in nwa.

I'll try to get the compression checked and get a cruiser guy to check it out asap.

Thanks for all your help.

You have stock gears then. Sounds like it was well taken care of.

what's the black switch on PS front fender, near antenna.

Non-US spec mirrors.

What they said: talk'em down, but don't let it get away, pending compression... PSP is oppty to haggle -- easy enough to replace.

i would believe that to be the sat radio antenna. and thats not the factory radio antenna... missing the end cap on the lower chrome attached to the rocker. look for hard lines around the windows and doors.... another side note would be to look for paint cracking where the yakima A1 towers are connected to the rain gutters.

i'd buy it...

edit: o'l bud of mine just sold an 86 Stock for 9k on the Electronic Bay... and hes IrIe

Confirmation on the XM antennae... though the stereo doesn't work.

There is some cracking around the rain gutters, but nothing too major.

To expand on the steering problem... is it normal for these things to not return to center with bigger tires? There was a little fluid pooling on the inner part of the front wheels. Time for a knuckle rebuild:confused:?? Like I said above the power steering pully was wobbling pretty good... could be a problem there too.

Thanks for the offer REKCUT.... I might be hitting you up.

Thanks for the info zuluzeugma... good to know.

These are GREAT things to negotiate with!
Knuckles are a PITA to rebuild, but youll have a whole better understanding of the front end once you get into doing a knuckle service.
When are you going to make an offer?
Looking forward to hearing wether or not you get this rig!

I have a few rules for buying used (all I ever do): just say NO to electrical problems - they're an indication of level of maintenance. Don't buy anything without complete service & repair records. NO rust.

Having said all that, my '84's electrical had been hacked by the PO (who was the original owner) for the most awful stereo install I've ever seen, & there was rust around the rear wheel wells although he swore he blasted them out every time he washed it. It had 124K mi, 4.11s + 33s + extended shackles, the body was straight, & he had complete records, including the original sale from the big Denver Toyota dealer. I paid $3.5K five years ago.

The truck you're looking for is way overpriced for the miles & options. You can do way better getting something off MUD. However, you're learning a lot just by investigating this one.

Keep looking & learning & you'll know when you find the right one. Maybe the H55 & OME suspension is your dream & maybe you'll have to install those in what you finally choose. I wouldn't pay over $2K for that truck without 'em, & it's not worth over $3.5K with 'em. Enhancements usually reduce the value from stock.

I bought my '83 11 years ago with 180K mi, 1 yr old paint job, new interior, & alleged 120K mi junkyard engine from a motorhead a couple friends grew up with & vouched for. Paid $5K after looking for 3-5 months.

Keep looking.

P.S. the steering problem is knuckle bearings.

I'll add my particularly unlearned and rash opinion.

If you want to build a 60, keep looking. If you want to drive a 60, buy it.

Rebuild the knuckles and drive it for 100,000 miles, then rebuild the engine. Then drive it some more. With the lift and the 5 speed, you're set up for a long while.

Good luck with the decision.

Even at 6000.00 with the lift general condition and the 5 speed should be OK, but I would offer less and top at 5999.99:grinpimp: That looks just like one of my old 85's I had in tennessee bought it new and sold it (dang ex wife) in early 90's. Good luck!
