How much are y’all paying for starters? Rock Auto has a rebuilt ACDelco it’s $39, and $14 core charge. Specter has a reman for $427 ($175 core). CCOT is in between. Beside’s the price, what’s the difference? The cheaper ones are from GM/Chevrolet?

Mine is starting to grunt again. I’ve cleaned it up a couple times in the last 40 years but this time I’m thinking of having it rebuilt. That should be a hundred or less. I was thinking of buying a spare but damn, what’s up?

Get the gear reduction starter.
It starts faster. Don't understand the specifics personally, but have seen first hand. Easy to visually id, the motor with a larger diameter cylinder is not inline with the gear.
I bought a random manufacturer version off Amazon or Ebay, 6 months later, I think the solenoid is less than totally reliable....
Toyota version would be the safe bet for sure. But if you're looking for an aftermarket or rebuild search with a later model year FJ60 or early (3f) FJ80. The starters for these will fit I think any of the F engines (fit my '74 F).

I bought two from FJ60s in Mud Classifieds for my 77 and 78. Cleaned them up and bolted right in. Ba Bam - they're bulletproof!

This is one of my favorite upgrades on my rig, it starts so much faster.
I have a 87 FJ60 rebuilt starter from the local auto parts store on my '76 right now, and I just picked up a Toyota remanufactured starter for the parts shelf.

Whatever "remanufactured" starter you buy my advice is to find an old fashioned 12 volt auto shop rebuild it. Art's Auto Electric in Ontario went through my original and a Napa "remanufactured" and replaced the critical parts with brand new parts in each of them. Yeah, I know all about the warranty. Bring it back and we will give you another. Try that when yer on a dirt road 14 miles from pavement..

Thanks, yes, there’s a shop I’ve been using for a long time, they have done alternators for me before. Pearland Alternator outside of Houston.

These are on backorder status at the moment. Just FYI. My dealer said 47 backorders at the Ontario depot.

My understanding is that they WILL fit the 1f too.
Here’s one from a 1990 I think?

Just buy from the dealer and take it back. It's a good thing for them for encourage core returns so that they can keep rebuilding these.
If you have a stock 40 then you don't have a core though. 60's are almost as rare as 40's here, and I don't think me yanking a 60 starter off in someone's driveway would go over too well. :p

The main reason I swapped out the stock starter, which was working fine, with a gear reduction starter, was that the GR starter draws less amps. With a low battery on the trail, a GR just might make the difference between getting it started or not. Being much lighter and smaller is a plus also.

Hey, here's a bargain for
"$28.12" Only one left. better hurry!

I dont understand, if you dont have a starter for a core, how did you start your engine?

I would but this + a Dorman rebuild kit and now you’re set. At least you can push start a ‘40 in a pinch.
