any idea what's going on here? how urgent? how much to fix?

Blown head gasket, I'll give you $5000 for it.
 
maybe get another photo from the other side or closer. Clean the whole area as it collecting from the transmission back. You could have multiple minor leaks.
 
Don’t lose the small insert pin out of the cable end, some fall out some don’t
 
Pro-Tip: lube the o-ring excessively before trying to jam it in there. It's going to be a tight fit, which is what ensures a good seal and no leaking. It's a 10-minute job, but since this is your first time doing it, give yourself an hour,... or two... maybe.
