Does anyone know the purpose of this bracket on the rear of the transfer case on my '96 HDJ80? Nothing is attached to it currently. It's just bolted to the rear of the t-case.

Very interesting! My scope of work is in automation and manufacturing and I would think it is some sort of assembly aid. Possibly to keep the yet to be installed transmission bell housing timed to the engine block.

Now that CharlieS has said something about it, I remember seeing little flimsy mud shields like that before on other vehicles. Maybe it was to keep water/mud off the u-joint?

It's a different-shaped skid on my '93 USDM.
Tho the other end of said skid isn't attached to anything.
Presume it's there to give 'some' protection to the speedo connector primarily.
It would not support the weight of the vehicle in any way.

Is there a part number for this? Mine is missing and not sure if it is needed. Also, I believe the transfer case ground wire bolts up to it but mine is just hanging, so looking for ideas on where else to connect. Thanks.

You can go to Partsouq, type in your VIN, then search by Name, Group, etc.
AFAIK it's discontinued. Try the Parting Out section of Classifieds.

You can start a new thread, then post up a photo showing your disconnected wire. Someone will chime in.

Thanks. I’m fairly experienced finding obscure parts via Partsouq, having replaced many other odd and ends but this one has stumped me. Can’t find on any diagrams of the t case. Likely NLA as you say anyway. 👍
