Guys,

Trying to work out the best way to sell my 1970 model 40 in regard to what top/roof to put on.

I have the following:

Hardtop (newly painted)
Hard doors (newly painted)
Besttop top (excellent condition)
Besttop full doors (good condition)
Bikini top (new)
Half Doors (good condition)

I do not have the rain gutters for the hard top. So when putting it up for sale which configuration do you think would be best considering I don't have, and don't really want to buy the rain gutter? Also, it will be mid-summer when it is for sale.

Additionally, if you chose Hard Top/Hard Doors, do you think I should include all the soft parts with the sale, or sell them separately. Guessing I could get $750 (estimate) for all the soft parts, do you think I would get that $750 in the final sales price if I included it with the sale?

Thanks,
Jonny

When I bought mine, I saw it and test drove it with no top, hard half doors, and windshield down. Sold!

did you want to keep some of the options and only sell it with 1. I like the hard top if I am buying, you can buy new soft tops, but finding a hard top is not that easy. If I can get it with a hard and soft top a big win. Some people really do not like the bet top soft tops and that would turn some people away, they make it look to much like a jeep top. My preference is hard top and hard doors

Thanks for the responses so far :) Please vote on the poll.

The hard top would 100% be going with the 40, just trying to decide if I should bother installing the soft parts, or not. Also, if I should include them with the sale or sell them separately?

Regards,
Jonny

Depends a lot on the climate where you're selling... Hardtops are almost mandatory here, and 40 without the don't sell as well. In Florida and California, hardtops come off and often never go back on.

I'd not install the bestop... I'd sell it separately.

If I'm buying, I would want all the options as a package to sweeten the deal. Priced accordingly, of course.

I expect you will get more by selling your soft top separately. A buyer is going to be comparing the price for your cruiser to prices of various other cruisers for sale, most of which probably won't have them. You can always use it in negotiation as well, if you need to.

I would offer the soft top for sale now. If you can get $750 go for it. In todays market I would be surprise if you could. Since the OEM style has become available in the last couple of years the demand for after market looking soft tops has dropped. But I doubt you would would anywhere that much more by making it part of the cruiser sale. Then since it looks like your selling your other 40 included the half doors and bikini top with the cruiser sale. If you don't want to install rain gutter it still might be worth your while to find one. Selling a vehicle that requires the new owner to buy something else is harder than just saying It's needs a new rain gutter but I have one included with the sale. Sometimes it's a harder sell to the better half when more money is going to have to be spent before winter. Most these old FJs are toys. The better half looks at them differently than say a good DD needed to get to work.

Sell it with hard top for sure, so some future purist can have it complete, but price it as a package with everything, and then if they don't want it all, you can sell that stuff on the side or use it later, and can renegotiate the price with the 'Cruiser buyer accordingly.

Thank you everyone for your responses - they are appreciated.

I have put the soft top/doors up for sale and if they sell before I get the rig up for sale, if it doesn't then maybe it will end up sweetening the deal.

The hardtop and hard doors is 100% going with the vehicle.

When I finally get everything back from paint I will get some pictures of it. I think I will run it with the hard doors and bikini top until it sells :)

Thanks again,
Jonny

i would set the cruiser at a base price say $x000.
then it would look cheaper and attract more attention,
then offer the tops ala cart.
with hard top and doors $ x750,
bikini top $x200.
and so on, if they want all of it they will pony up or you can sell the soft tops to me.

Well you sell your 40 with the soft top and sell the hard top separately since they are not that easy to find. lol

It was a PITA to find this top and doors!
