What's better offroad, 80 series, or 100 series?

Driver makes a big difference in the ability of the truck being driven.
 
No Jeep ever made can compare to a Toyota specially a LC. Peoples on 160 different country's can conform this.

one thing to remember about Rover's is that it was basically the only vehicle available to British colony's for a very long time. So don't let it's early popularity make you think it was the vehicle of choice.

As far as the driver goes, I don't see this adding or subtracting from a vehicles ability. It's more of how much of the vehicle's ability that a specific driver can bring out. I personally tried to set up my truck to make it as easy as possible on me to get it down the trail.
 
Guys.....let's not be in denial here regarding the Wrangler. We're wheelers. We get our Cruisers and soak a few grand in them to lift and mod them for the trails. Wrangler owners do the same thing.

Once you have a Wrangler with a 4" lift and 35's with 4:1 T-case, RTI's above 1000 and 80" wheelbase, you have a near unstoppable vehicle. EVERY single Jeep buddy of mine with a good setup (like our Cruisers get....lift, 35's etc) on their Wrangler will simply BLOW US AWAY....AND THEY SHOULD!

They are:

Lighter
Smaller
Articulate far better
More ground clearance
Better turning

...compared to a big vehicle like an FJC or LC. My buddies will eat my Lexus for lunch. They even friggin' IDLE up the rock obstacles.

Yes, they are unreliable. And yes, there are SOME places where the LWB 80 or 100 will out-ease the Jeep. In the other 90% of the trail obstacles...they have us burried.

Don't EVER bring up the Rubicon Trail specifically and then put down a Wrangler. A stock Wrangler can run the Rubi unscathed and almost easily. Compare this to big 80's and a 100 (or two) that stuggle to fit, clear, and climb the rocks. They often get damaged as well.

Let's all be honest with ourselves?

Seriously, though, I agree it is ridiculous to compare an 80/100 with a rubicon- totally different classes/types/size vehicles.

And if I can comment on my own pro-Wranger post:

Someone mught ask me......."well why don't you get one then if you think they're so good"?

EZ answer....I prefer the safety of LWB, the comfort of a wagon (especially the 100 as eveybody already WELL knows), and the reliability of a LC. So for me, a Wrangler is not in the mix.

I think that heads off other potent questions from others? :D

Damn, I can't believe someone here gave the Wrangler a fair view. :)

They do tick me off some on the trail but man am I comfy. :)

I also think it's even more incredible that a big and comfy wagon can do these crazy obstacles. To me the challenge of a Cruiser is greater than the Wrangler. YEA CRUISER! :cheers:
 
So what am I missing here? From this picture I honestly don't see this truck doing the Rubicon easily and unscathed. Now I've never seen the Rubicon but I'm told it's rather grueling and tough.

I did this whole trail un locked and am sure my wifes old 1996 4Runner would have had an easier time than this truck did.

The things are small, they are only 80" wheelbase, flex well even stock by disco'ing the front sway.......here's one example:

Sami's have a 80" wheelbase. TJ's are something like 93"

Looks like stock height w/ too big tires? That is the older style Rubicon btw.

Stock Jeep Rubicons can do the Rubicon trail. The wheelbase, overall size are the big factors.

The new Rubicons have lockers, ATRAC, SFA and a host of aftermarket parts- The 4" long travel kits look really great.
Also, the open-air architecture is enviable. After sitting in a FJ40 w/ no glass up, I totally understand why.
 
i don't think you can say a rubicon is better than a lc just because it can fit better thru the tight trails (speaking about width of the trail). i'm sure alot of atv's could get thru there also without damage. overall size seems to be the limiting factor between the rubicon and the 80's. both are locked in both axles and have good suspension movement. so on an equal playing field i would not think the lc would be worse than the rubicon. of course the lc is considerable heavier but it will haul more than the jeep and tow more than a jeep all the while going to the same places off road the jeeps go, plus if it rains you will not get wet in a lc. i like the jeep rubicon unlimited, but if you hang out in their forums you'll hear about all there problems, most of them are brand new. poor build quality compared to a toyota and i don't think the jeep folks will argue that.
