cruiserbrett said:whether its a 78 or 79 aint going to matter much. currently CA smog law eliminated the 30 year rolling deal, so you will need to smog your cruiser every two years for the forseeable future. there is no magic birthday for the cruiser when it graduates from the smog program anymore if you own a 1976 or newer cruiser...
cruiserbrett said:does it have a california title already? if not, youre going to have fun at the DMV for a vin verification. they do check the sticker under the hood to see what model year it is.
emissions compliance is not his/her expertise, so they should not hassle you directly, but you can only get a 60 day temporary op. permit once.
cruiserbrett said:Aside from just passing visual, the BAR computer at the smog station will tell the smog tech to check for a cat, and since it wont be there, youre screwed, unless you can somehow prove that it is a 1978 model year, which aint going to be easy since its past the september month break point.

On one of my relocations for work I went to the DMV in the new state to transfer all my vehicles titles. The VIN on my motorcyle was found to be off one digit where a W was mistaken for a V. I had to go back through the previous titles and have the correction made and a new title for each state issued as Woody describes. It went back something like 3 or 4 states, each requiring a new title from the previous state and was a hassle but doable.
BTW, the Spector link is correct for my 75/08. I don't understand the 1960 plus the 5th and 6th digit thing. Where did you hear that, Malphrus?
Gromit said:Where did you get this information? When I checked the CA DMV website 2 weeks ago it stated smog certs were only required back to the 30 year mark, formerly 25 years.
cruiserbrett said:check here. Do not use the search function on the DMV website. It links you up with what best matches your search criteria regardless of whether or not its current or old incorrect info.
Heres the requirements:
