So I am going to go look at a 300k mile 100 series. It is a New England truck and I am sure have some rust underneath. Anything major to look for that may be a deal breaker? What would a decent price be for something that is clean and solid with these miles be? Supposedly everything works except the ac, even the AHC.

Cheers

You didn't mention year when asking "what's a good price". But regardless of year, don't buy rust. The link below will give you a list of things to look for. Leave the rusty rigs for parts ,we need them, we don't need the pain & expense of reconditioning a rusty rig.

There are many things to look at, starting with vehicle history before you go to see/inspect.

Dig into this link on "Whitelady" and you'll see some things to look for in a high millage 100: LX470 to build or not to build... She's a one owner, rust free, beauty, drives great and really nice now that I'm 95% done restoring. In the link you'll see a whole list (not all inclusive) of links to pages of things I've found and corrected. I do my own work, otherwise it would have cost around $5 to 7K to get to this point just in labor and parts. It already had $5k of work done at shop's in past few years by PO. I'll be listing soon, as it's time to close my shop for the winter. If I get 100% finished with restoration in next few weeks I'll ask for more than I'm currently thinking. Currency I'm thinking $10k would be win win for buyer & seller as is. This should give you some ideas, of what to pay.

KKB is a guide on price, but misses the mark when it comes to really clean. As it is based more on millage and misses what in takes to base-line these 100's or what that's worth if done correctly.

I'll hate to let go of "WhitLady" I'm in love with the pearl white, AHC and other refinements of LX are cool. But my 01LC is king, and been with me for ~14 years.

I just sold GaryBear (2000 w/265K) to a mechanic for his daughter, after listing for only one week. Late summer early through early fall is a slow time for sales of these 100's (until first snow) so this is a good time to buy IMHO. I spent 50 hours recondition, getting safe and drivable (base-lined) and ran out of time to deal with minor body rust (tail gate & windshield) and dents & paint, so sold (listed at$7,200) in one week. In my book this one I considered rough and stated that in my listing. I gave buyer a good deal in my opinion, and He said it was best driving & cleanest he' looked at. I pointed out all issues I could find telling & showing him "it's not that clean". Don't expect that from your seller, buyer beware as they say.
GrayBear, was a bear to work on.

you couldn't give me a 300k NE 100. It would hurt my heart to look at...

$2800 If nothing else I figure it will save my 4runner from the salt for the winter. I really think I could drive it for a year and see if I can live with the 100 series. I love my 4runner so I cant imagine I wont like it.

It is indeed rusty and crusty, but the frame doesn't look soft or anything like that.

I just bought a 1998 this week with 325,000 miles. It's always been in Tennessee, 2 owner, in the last 10,000 miles new timing belt & water pump, radiator, belts, hoses, valve cover gaskets, battery, brakes, rotors, tires, and full tune up with all new ignition coils. There's no rust but several parking lot bumps and bruises, both front seats have cracked leather but I have a guy that can make them look good again for $75. I paid $3,400 for it and I felt like a got a good deal. I just sold a built 99 with 107,000 miles and this one runs just as good, it's just not as pretty but the 99 sold for $23,000. The other one was so nice I couldn't bring myself to take it in some places I wanted to go but with this one, I have no worries. I'll probably spend another $4000 on lifting it, tires, and building armor but will still have less than $8,000 in it. The big selling point to me was no rust and nothing mechanical to do, just mods. The guy I bought it from owned it for the last 10 years and he had a folder that's 3" thick with service work done at the local Toyota dealer. After 325,000 miles, there's not a drip under it after setting in my garage since last Tuesday. I personally think the 4.7 is one of the best engines Toyota built. Like someone else said, find one with little or no rust, it would be worth driving 500 - 600 miles or more to get one. From someone who bought a rusted 4Runner, I would never buy one again from the rust belt. Every time I had to work on something, I would have to cut bolts off, what a pain.

Take your time, you'll find a good one

Deciding factor is how much do you think you can sell it for when you are done with it? Do you think you could sell it with over 300k in a few years when you are done? I'd say wait if it's crusty and high miles. Though I've belonged to enough forums to know if your asking this question you are mentally prepared to bring this home and work your way through it. That's fine too. I've brought home a few ? cars and fixed and cleaned my way into a decent truck.

And I've had 4 4runners, 3 3rd gen and 1 4th gen. The 4runners feel nimble compared but these v8s are so smooth and the trucks are very comfy. 3rd row is nice if you have kids.

Be sure it is equipped to be towed. Everything has it's limits. Don't be fooled by some that have extremely high mileage vehicles.

Yea I got some shots of it and its rusted pretty bad. The frame does seem solid for up here so that is not so bad but the body is rough... Door sill is really rusted and the right rear quarter is bad. Guess I should just wait and pull the trigger on a nice one and get it over with lol. I just don't want to pay for it. The Cali trucks are nice but man I would have 2600 more miles on it by the time I get it home and not to mention the $500 in fuel to get it there. I think I will have to get serious about a 100 when my 4runner starts acting up more than it should. Thanks for the help and all the nice 300k 100s they sure don't look like that up here.
Lexus LX470 2000

i have a 300K 100 in the south i would sell you with 0 rust. 99 with rear AC and diff lock ;)

seriously, never buy an old truck up north. not worth the trouble with all the rust.
