I am looking to add a winch to my 1977 FJ40. Is an 8000 lb WARN enough? These go for about $500. Any other suggestions on winch size, models and brands would be appreciated.

There was a huge winch thread either on this section or the chit chat or something, do a search across all sections of the forum and you will get many opinions. But yes an 8000 warn should be enough, with the 8274 being agreed upon as probably the best possible option for a 40.

9000lb or 9500lb should suffice. I have a 9000lb Mega Winch. I love it, it will out do any
Warn!

She's about 5'7" and maybe 125 .... Ohhhh, WINCH. Sorry.

The M8000 will work fine for occasional use. If you are looking at frequent pulls and more continuous use, the HS9500 or the 8274-50 are the best....I'm a HUGE fan of the 8274 model.

When you need one, you don't want junk. Go 8274, you'll never regret it. The only time mine stalled was pulling a loaded 80 series out of a 5 ft snowbank it snak up to the doors in. Simply doubling the line got it right out...

Ramsey Pro Plus 8000 on Buddy, my FJ40. With custom feet-front mounting on a ConFerr 8274 winch bumper. It lays nicely between the frame rails out of the way.

No problems so far with occasional winching, mostly just to get a chance to use it once in a while :D I'm sure double-lining it would get me out of whatever I could get into -- within reason, of course :p

i like my M12000... but i drive a 60 full of $hit

fj80, warn 12k
fj60 warn 10k
82 fj40 Warn 8274-50
67 fj45 Warn 8274

for a 40 the 8274 is the way to go IMOP, find a used one for $500. or buy new for 1k.....

the m8000 will prolly do just fine and get you out of a jam, but the 8274 is just much better IMOP, and you will have it FOREVER, a 20 year old 8274 in good shape is worth $500 which is what it cost new. a 20 year old M8000 isn't worth more than $200.

40 series warn 9000i
60 :'( No winch accomodations, would probably slap a 10k on it if I felt the need
80 is getting the Warn 12k (the big empty hole in the ARB is starting to bug) :D

8274-50 is a pulling machine. I've used mine numerous times and only required a double line pull once. I won't knock any other brand winch just my opinion.
