What size hub socket do i need for removal of the adjusting nut?

54mm

And for the conversion...

54 mm = 2 1/8 inches
50 mm = 2 inches

I just sourced this locally for about $15 a socket. They are a 3/4 drive. Fortunately I had a step down adapter so I could use my 1/2 breaker bar. I used the sockets for all of about 2 minutes doing a knuckle tear down.

Why don't we have a tool loan program on this board?

Well unfortunately there is no freaking place around my house that carries the socket. So I'm gonna put it back together. I was planning on tearing into the axle on my only off day.:frown:

You'll probably have to get it in 3/4" drive and buy a 3/4" to 1/2" adapter, unless you have a 3/4" torque wrench.

You really don't need the socket to take the knuckle apart OR put it back together, a screwdriver and a hammer will do both in a pinch.

However a socket makes it easier to set bearing pre-load. ;)

Also some friendly advice for the knuckle uninitiated? Set aside more than a day if you plan on rebuilding the knuckles correctly. I would give myself a day PER SIDE. Also do you have the rebuild kit and FSM in hand? No point in tearing into it without these two things. Look at Jeff Zepps site for a 1976 knuckle rebuild or my site for a 71 rebuild. Oh and invest in a LOT of rags, it's a horribly messy job... Good luck and post up when you start!

They are made in 1/2" as well. Both of mine were 1/2" drive.

I got mine from Trail Gear and it was 3/8 drive. Unfortunately for my tear down I needed 1/2 drive, so I just welded a 1/2" impact socket that I have never used to it, worked out great.

I used a 54mm for the disk brakes from a 1989 FJ62 if that helps more.

You could have just used a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter...

Didn't have one and the welder was handy and it was about 9 or 10 at night, I can always cut it off later when I do the reassembly :)

Are you guys talking about the OTC SST? The SST I had for my old knuckles (2") was 3/8".

I got a Sears socket for the larger/newer knuckles. I couldn't find that size in a regular socket except in 3/4" drive. But I have no patience either.

A trick I picked up from reading on MUD is to use toilet paper, it's the s***z for cleaning knuckle crud up.

I just did the CV's in my 100 and it took one roll per side.

To clean the outside of the knuckle use oven cleaner, another Mud trick I read and have field tested. Spray it on let it set for an hour or so and rinse off all that built up crap. Also works on transmissions and bellhousings.

This exact thinking led me to build my own hub socket from scratch parts I had late one night.

I know this is an old post, but I was looking for a 50mm socket for my 8/73 FJ40 drub brake hub nut and look all over. Found this post to figure out I have a 50mm not a more recent model with a 54mm nut. I drove through 4 towns to find it and couldn't. Found this at Northern tool with free shipping for 6 bucks. Thought I would pass it along. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200337319_200337319
