What size hub socket is needed for axle?

I know this is an old post, but I was looking for a 50mm socket for my 8/73 FJ40 drub brake hub nut and look all over. Found this post to figure out I have a 50mm not a more recent model with a 54mm nut. I drove through 4 towns to find it and couldn't. Found this at Northern tool with free shipping for 6 bucks. Thought I would pass it along. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200337319_200337319

The same problem arises, though...That doesn't look to be deep enough. I have one of those cheaply made hub 50mm sockets that SOR sells. I have to be careful not to crack it every time I use it.

Kragen/Shucks/Checker is starting to sell and rent these larger sizes. I will look next time I am in there to see exactly what sizes are available.

Nothing like a front axle thread to bring everyone out of the woodwork!

FWIW, Marlin Crawler sells a nice 54mm hub socket for a 1/2" drive. I got mine! :D

X2 on the toilet paper tip. It works and it's cheap.

Also, wish I'd known about the oven cleaner when I did my '62. That sounds great. I degreased mine, brushed 'em up good, & washed 'em with soap and water in the kitchen sink. Then, I used compressed air to dry 'em. And finally, I rattle-canned 'em black.

I'll go back into the woodwork now.

The dishwasher works extremely well for cleaning crudded up knuckles. Do this only when your wife will not be home for two full cycles of the dishwasher. I double up on the Cascade and go on the longest cycle. They come out better than you would think.

I have a Toyota SST 54mm and a Craftsman 2 1/8 socket. The Craftsman is heavy and nice and is my fovorite. The SOR cheap hubsocket absolutely sucks. It deforms right away and is not worth the effort of using it.

Actually they say it's a 50mm, but it looks like a 15/16 socket (24mm) for $9.00?

If it truely is 50mm then even at $9.00 that is a great find!

I believe it is a stock photo for their sockets. Worse case on it being too shallow, I cut it and weld on an extension. I checked all the Kragen type places in a 40 mile radius. No go.

But, I hope I am right on the picture. I should get it tomorrow so I will psot up more info.

the socket came but was about 1/2 too shallow so I cut off the head and welded that to an older 2.24 something socket I had for my old D30 jeepaxle. It took about 5 minutes to cut and tack weld together, but worked like a champ. 6 bucks, can't beat it especially when it would cost me more than gas to drive for 40 minutes to get one in a larger town.

Sorry for bringing this old post back to life, but.....

Is the hub nut for a 74' 52mm? It seems to have jumped around and never really confirmed for sure. There seems to be 50, 52 and 54 floating out there...Thanks

(hey, I least I was using the SEARCH function:D)

:grinpimp: Steve, thanks for the follow up......had checked out the one from SOR and was a bit concerned by not being able to use a tork wrench on it; in a pinch I guess it would work but was thinking there had to be a source for 3/4 or 1/2 drive deepwell sockets in 52 mm or 2 1/16 SAE
......then "Revelation"
:lol:last place I would have searched was on the heep site:steer:
guess the 74 is a special beast as it seems it is the only one that has the 52 mm nut and also the f 1 1/2 engine..........strange things but then again the F engine is supposedly a copy ofthe early chevy 6 cyl.......a PO had even installed a delco remy GM starter on mine:cheers:
