so again with questions on how to setup my wifes fj40, i was figuring with the 4.88s and the current setup with the stock 4 speed tranny and tcase its going to be a weak 34:1 in low range, lowest ive ever wheeled was a YJ with about 40:1 and wasnt impressed and i know my wife didnt like it as it was to fast, so im wondering what some reasonable priced options are? i was thinking either

swap out the stock tranny for a sm420/465 with a 3 speed case (have an extra

swap just the 3 speed case in

pull it and add an auto with 3 speed case

thats all i can think of off had that is some what reasonable price. what say you? thanks!

At a guess a 4:1 or 2.5:1 Toy Box would be cheaper and easier than the auto conversion.

I've ridden in trucks with the SM420 option, they performed well. IMHO that is about the best bang for the buck out there.

my 45 has a 420 in it and i havent tryed it with the 4.88s that i put in yet but its about 80:1 which i think should be fairly good, i forgot about drivelines mods though

My 40 had an sm420, 3sp case, and 4:11 gears, and 35" tires and the crawl ratio was nice.. Handled Rubicon very well..

I now have the same tranny, dana 300 w/ 4:1, and 4:56 gears, 40"tires(not sure the final crawl ratio) It's a lot slower than before!! Love it.

i wouldnt mind putting a sm420 in it as it is a super low first gear but those are getting harder to find over here along with the adapter and so on, i really wanna put an auto in it so its easier to drive for the wife but i think thats going to be pretty spendy with DL mods and everything else.... damn i hate building two rigs at once sometimes!

which it's your CR target .?

Toy box come on top of my list that would allow you to do more stuff ..

the lowest i can go with the best price:D

Hi All:

If you think your spouse would prefer the automatic transmission, then go for it! :D

A TH350 or TH400 behind that SBC is a great combo. Combined with a typical Land Cruiser t-case the crawl ratio won't seem that low, but will be adequate for a lot of trail running.

Regards,

Alan

Drivelines would be an issue with the Toy box as well. I was thinking more in terms of the cost of the transmission and adapters. I think the drive train would get fairly long with either one and that means a DC rear DS which isn't cheap.

I'm pretty sure you can find a 420 or 465 for a reasonable price if you shop around. You might even find a used adapter from one of the guys that moved on to an Atlas. Check with the Rock Gods.;)

i know most of the rock gods (me included) and noone has a crusier that has been swapped, i should have looked for the adapter, AA wants 700 to a 700R4 and 575 to a th350. looks like ill be looking for a sm420 to adapt in, if i do so with the thin adapter does this need the DLs changed?

Really? Glondark, BryanD, etc none of those guys has ever had an LC with an SM420? Maybe Rockape knows someone who knows someone. It's worth asking IMHO. The SM420 is a popular transmission for a lot of trucks.:meh:

You would probably be okay on the DL's as long as you keep it SUA. SOA and your probably looking at new DL's no matter what drive train you go with. You could fab the front DL out of two pieces of square tube at home. I know one guy who runs that way, it works well as long as you don't go fast in 4WD. :hillbilly:

As far as I know BryanD has only had his what's left of a samurai, I'll check around, found 2 sm465s with 205s behind them with a brand new clutc and flywheel with bellhousing. For 200 bucks, looks like the rig will tAke alittle longer I was hoping to not have do problems when SOAing it

I read somewhere that the auto trans also creates a lower crawl ratio through the torque converter? Donno how that works, but that is what Ive heard. I like wheeling with an auto tranny personally.

It's the torque multiplication of an auto. You "basically" have a 2:1 reduction because of how slow you can go due to the Torque converter.

40:1 is pretty good for an auto.

My FJ40 is about 50:1 - 700R automatic (3), D300 (4), 4.1 Cruiser diffs...torque multiplied, 100:1. It works excellent, and a correctly set up auto makes a world of difference.

For an auto, shoot for 40-60:1...for the stick 80-120:1. I was 63:1 with my old SM465 and it was marginally too fast for really good control in some situations.

yeah i know you only need about half the reduction for an auto. i am going to most likley put it together the way it is and see but dont wanna make DLs twice. i have seen alot of people that if they start getting over 50:1 the auto wants to drive threw the brakes as well

only if the stall converter is way off will it driver through the brakes

Im a little late to the party here but I agree with Woody and Mace on this. It works cause the torque converter isnt locked at those lower speeds so it isnt a true 1:1 with the gear ratio it is in for X gear. thats why it works well. I am currently at 168-172:1 depending on my first gear on the truggy and I love it but 90% of the time or more it is not needed. 100:1 would be pretty excellent with a stick even 80:1 wouldnt be to bad on some of te larger stuff. on mine with only the toybox in low range I am at 73:1 and it isnt bad at all even on the 40's so a smaller tire would be great then with just the 3 speed case I am at 75:1 not a huge difference but I can feel it. I usually keep the 3 speed in low then flip the toybox when I need it since it is closer. but 70:1 aint bad at all.

how is the toybox setup? im assuming mini truck box? im assuming then you would have to run 2 adapters? thanks for the info
